We are seeking to hire a Deputy Head of Primary with experience in an international school for commencement August 2025. Reporting to: Campus Principal
Purpose of Role
To provide leadership, direction, and co-ordination within the international school with the primary focus on developing and maintaining effective educational programmes, and to promote the improvement of teaching and learning in preschool and primary school.
Deputy Head of Primary Key Responsibilities:
- To uphold the school’s vision, mission and core values.
- To oversee preschool and primary schools.
- To be part of the school’s leadership team.
- To contribute to the school’s strategic development and annual development plans.
- To have sound knowledge of the National Curriculum for England and International Primary Curriculum, curriculum development and current educational thinking in all phases of the school.
- To possess excellent knowledge and experience of assessment and tracking to inform student progress, including the use of standardised tests to impact on learning.
- To lead and support the school’s appraisal system.
- To have a good understanding of data management systems.
- To be able to manage a budget effectively.
- To be an excellent practitioner.
- To contribute to the wider school community to raise the school’s profile.
- Manage middle leaders in developing a professional culture amongst all staff at the school.

Specific Responsibilities
Strategic Direction / Shaping the Future:
- Support the Campus Principal in ensuring the vision for the school is clearly articulated, shared, understood and acted upon effectively by all.
- Demonstrate the vision and values of the school in everyday work and practice.
- Motivate and work with others to create a shared culture and positive climate.
- Assist the Campus Principal in the ongoing and annual review standards of leadership, teaching and learning in specific areas of responsibility across all areas of school provision.
- Hold staff accountable for agreed benchmarks/curriculum targets throughout the school.
- Take an active role in all stages of the school appraisal system.
Establish short-, medium-, and long-term plans for development and resourcing for the specific areas of responsibility.
Learning and Teaching:
- Work with the Campus Principal to raise the quality of teaching and learning and student achievement, setting high expectations and monitoring and evaluating effectiveness of learning outcomes.
- Establish creative, responsive and effective approaches to learning and teaching.
- Ensure a culture and ethos of challenge and support where all students get better and become engaged in their own learning.
- Demonstrate and articulate high expectations and set stretching targets for the whole school community.
- Monitor, evaluate and review classroom practice by supporting the “Looking for Learning” process.
- Challenge underperformance at all levels and ensure effective correction action and follow-up.
- Promote, contribute to and use the LIP throughout APIS learning situations.
Provide regular feedback for colleagues in a way which recognises good practice and supports their process against professional and performance management objectives resulting in a tangible impact on student learning.
Develop whole staff, subject teams, and individuals to enhance performance:
- Undertake coaching and mentoring where possible – time permitting.
- Plan, organise, and deliver staff meetings, where necessary bringing in outside speakers.
- Keep abreast of the latest developments in the area and disseminate effectively to other members of staff.
Be an excellent role model, exemplifying a high standard of teaching and promoting high expectations for all members of the school community.
Work with the Leadership Team to raise standards through staff mentorship, challenge and support.
Contribute to the development and delivery of training and support for staff.
Lead the development and review of all aspects of the curriculum including planning, recording and reporting, assessment for learning and the development of a creative and appropriate curriculum for pupils.
Work in partnership with the Leadership Team in managing the school through strategic planning and the formulation of policy and delivery of strategy, ensuring leadership decisions are implemented.
With the Leadership Team, lead the processes involved in monitoring, evaluating, and challenging the quality of teaching and learning taking place throughout the schools, including lesson observations to ensure consistency and quality.
Ensure systematic teaching and recording of impact is consistently high across the schools.
Develop and review systems to ensure robust evaluation of school performance, progress data and actions to secure improvements.
Ensure through leading by example the active involvement of students and staff in their own learning.
Developing Self and Working with Others
- Work with the Campus Principal to build a professional learning community which enables others to achieve it.
- Support staff within your team, and within the whole school in achieving high standards through continuing effective professional development.
- Be committed to your own professional development.
- Implement successful performance management processes with an allocated team of staff.
Securing Accountability
- Lead and support staff in fulfilling their responsibilities regarding the school’s performance and standards.
- Support the Leadership Team in reporting the school’s performance to its community and partners.
- Promote and protect the health and safety and welfare of students and staff.
- Responsible for promoting the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people within the school.
Strengthening Community
- Work with the Leadership Team in developing the policies and practice, which promotes inclusion, equality and the extended services that the school offers.
- Develop and maintain contact with specialist support services as appropriate.
- Promote the positive involvement of parents/carers in school life.
- Organise and conduct meetings where appropriate with parents and carers to ensure positive outcomes for all parties.
- Strengthen partnership and community working.
- Promote positive relationships and work with colleagues in other schools and external agencies.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with others to develop effective professional relationships.
- Communicate effectively with parents/carers regarding students’ achievements and wellbeing using school systems.
- Regularly review the effectiveness of your teaching and assessment procedures and their impact on students’ progress, attainment, and wellbeing.
- Be responsible for improving your teaching through participating fully in training and development opportunities identified by the school or because of your appraisal.
- Fully and positively take part in the school’s performance appraisal scheme to develop and enhance personal and service performance.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties requested/assigned as required by the Campus Principal, especially regarding the school’s administrative function.
- Ensure that school policies including those relating to Safeguarding, Race Equality, Equal Opportunities, Code of Conduct and Health & Safety are adhered to and promoted amongst staff.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- Qualified teacher status.
- Possess relevant bachelor’s degree in education or a bachelor’s degree with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or its equivalent. National professional qualification for headship (NPQH) or postgraduate qualification in education/leadership and management is desirable.
- Minimum three (3) years of successful leadership and management experience in a school.
- Successful teaching experience as indicated in relevant references.
- Involvement in school self-evaluation and development planning.
- Demonstrable experience of successful line management and staff development.
- Data analysis skills, and the ability to use data to set targets and identify weaknesses.
- Understanding of high-quality teaching based on evidence, and the ability to model this for others and support others to improve.
- Understanding of school finances and financial management.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate a vision and inspire others.
- Ability to build effective working relationships.
- Computer literate with good interpersonal communication skills.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
