About the Role

Reporting to the Chair of Computer Science, the Senior Laboratory Demonstrator is responsible for the preparation, demonstration, and instructional support of core year 1 & 2 undergraduate computer science courses as determined by chair (e.g., labs, seminars, tutorials). The incumbent is also responsible for test/exam reviews; lab test and exam management; course software and systems monitoring; assisting in promoting academic integrity; managing specialty and hardware labs; and recommending software and hardware solutions for course instruction and faculty research.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in assigned labs, for core year 1 & 2 courses as determined by chair (e.g. COSC 1P02, 1P03, 2P03 and 2P08);
  • Assist course instructor(s) in preparation of materials consistent with the course learning objectives, which support secondary course component instruction and coordination such as labs, tutorials, reviews, under direction of the Chair;
  • Administer course tutorials and lead labs for specified core/critical, test and exam review sessions, and other labs/tutorials when required, ensuring that material aligns with course learning outcomes and lecture content, in consultation with instructors;
  • Assist in the delivery and management of laboratory tests and exams, to ensure software/hardware functionality and academic integrity of the assessments;
  • Create, update and manage the departmental webpages, under the direction of a designated faculty member or Chair;
  • Manage the departmental social media content, actively seek content from the department including student success stories, under the direction of a designated faculty member or Chair;
  • Provide support and communicate with TAs when academic integrity issues are detected in student submissions in upper-year courses, and liaise with instructor and Undergraduate Program Officer;
  • Maintain the Computer Science graduate office computers to support their course work and specialized research software;
  • Analyze and solve problems for software applications and systems in the labs and research offices;
  • Monitor and assist in the setup, maintenance, safekeeping, and proper use of robotics equipment for COSC laboratory sessions;
  • Monitor Computer Science / Applied Computing lab computers to support effective and uninterrupted course delivery;
  • Regularly and proactively monitor software and hardware in computer labs, to identify malfunctions and other issues, and liaise with ITS to resolve problems in a timely manner;
  • Assist in the maintenance of Computer Science lab computers for course delivery, ensuring that required software systems for courses are satisfactory, and provide a consistent experience to the users;
  • Support basic computer lab issues reported by lab demonstrators and help with the education of lab demonstrators and students.
Key Skills and Experience
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, or the equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered;
  • Knowledge of teaching and demonstration techniques in undergraduate programs in computer science and related disciplines;
  • Familiarity with concepts and programming platforms used in the computer science curriculum;
  • Knowledge of relevant software systems for instruction (e.g. Brightspace, plagiarism detection software, generative AI);
  • Promotes and embodies inclusivity and respect within the workplace and the broader community;
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Strong presentation skills, with the experience to facilitate lab sessions, give clear and concise instructions, and manage both large and small groups;
  • Ability to develop laboratory exercises that complement course content, utilizing current technology, and aligning with student knowledge base;
  • Strong background and ability in software systems maintenance and development, programming, and application use; and
  • Excellent organizational skills and proven ability to establish priorities and multitask.
Preferred or Asset Skills
  • Industry experience in software development is an asset;
  • Previous experience as Course Instructor, Laboratory Demonstrator, Laboratory Coordinator or a Manager of Research/Teaching Facility is desirable;
  • Work experience in a software developer role in industry;
  • Knowledge of a broad range of relevant multi-user computer systems and applications, such as Linux, Microsoft Windows and MS Active Directory; and
  • Experience with Public Cloud providers: Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform.
Salary and Total Rewards
  • Job Grade L, Salary Scale ($66,817 - $108,353);
  • Target Hiring Range: $66,817 - $80,000
  • This is a permanent position that includes:
