CARETAKER TEMPORARY

Holy Family School, Paris

40 Hours/Week; 12 Months/Year - 1.0 FTE
Day Shift - 7:00 am to 4:00 pm

Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience in cleaning procedures and techniques, normally acquired through a combination of at least one year of training and experience in a commercial or institutional cleaning;
  • An Ontario Secondary School Diploma, including technical subjects, is preferred;
  • Able to read and write text, including writing requisitions for supplies, writing reports regarding occurrences at the job site, reading and understanding WHMIS and Material Safety Data Sheets and using basic arithmetic including proportions;
  • A working knowledge of basic electricity, basic plumbing, heating system operation, yard maintenance, cleaning procedures and techniques, fire extinguishers and alarms. The ability to operate security systems and programmable time controllers;
  • A working knowledge of safety regulations, practices and procedures such as WHMIS, use of personal protective equipment, lifting techniques, materials handling, and working from ladders and scaffolding. Able to understand all WHMIS and safety regulations and perform tasks in a safe manner;
  • Knowledge and experience in the safe operation of all required equipment and machinery, such as power/hand tools, floor machines and lawn maintenance equipment, and including working from ladders, scaffolding, scissor‑lifts and man‑lifts;
  • Basic working knowledge of a computerized environment, including data entry in various software programs; internet and e‑mail;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to function effectively with supervisors, plant staff, teachers, students and contractors;
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and/or in a group setting; and
  • Subject to the Board's duty to accommodate, the ability to perform required physical tasks, including climbing ladders and scaffolding, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying moderate and heavy loads, including janitorial equipment, furniture, materials/supplies, pails of water and bags of garbage.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean, healthy and safe environment within the school or assigned work area;
  • Maintain the school grounds, including grass cutting and snow shoveling;
  • Assist the Principal with site emergencies, i.e., heating, repairs, electrical, water pipes;
  • Be aware of and report any potentially harmful items or occurrences on or around school property;
  • Assist external groups using the school facilities, including opening/closing doors, and reporting any concerns to the Principal, i.e., damages, smoking, fire regulations;
  • Perform minor repairs on the Board's buildings, equipment or machinery including plumbing, electrical, paint touch up, repairing furniture, and boarding broken windows;
  • Service all equipment, machinery or systems. This would include changing filters, fan belts, greasing shafts or bearings, etc.;
  • Operate the school heating system, including turning the system on/off, changing filters, greasing parts, and monitoring the operation of the system. Attend the school to ensure the heating system is running on weekends and holidays, as required;
  • Operate the school security system, including checking and locking interior/exterior doors, checking, closing and locking windows through the building, turning lights on/off and activating the security system at the end of the shift;
  • Attend the school for fire, security of other after‑hours events, as requested;
  • Maintain inventory of materials related to cleaning and maintenance, including preparing requisitions, receiving and storage of materials;
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, including Ministry reports/records, online work requests, occurrence reports, fire regulation logs, security system reports, weekly fire alarm checks, water flushing and salting/sanding logs;
  • Work in compliance with WHMIS regulations and ensure that chemicals are used, labelled and stored safely in accordance with the Material Safety Data Sheet. This includes referencing MSDS's using computer programs;
  • Follow safe work practices and procedures, including ensuring that proper protective equipment is worn and maintained;
  • Assist the Principal to carry out fire drills, safety audits and workplace inspections; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance, Principal or Designate.
