Director of Advocacy and Bargaining

ABOUT THE POSITION
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Advocacy and Bargaining works to advance the AJC’s advocacy initiatives and coordinate collective bargaining. They coordinate the implementation of the AJC’s advocacy agenda, strategies and activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drives the planning, development and execution of AJC advocacy strategies and initiatives.
- Supports the AJC elected leadership in the determination and development of bargaining priorities related to 1) AJC-Treasury Board bargaining and 2) AJC-COPE bargaining.
- Manages staff primarily focused on advocacy issues.
- Plays role of advocacy project lead, offering guidance to colleagues, working collaboratively on advocacy projects.
- Supports the AJC elected leadership in the determination and development of advocacy priorities to improve the working lives of AJC members.
- Designs campaign strategies and plans to engage members, other unions and key stakeholders to help advance the AJC’s advocacy agenda.
- Proactively monitors, analyzes, and interprets government programs and activities and provides advice on the implications and opportunities for the AJC.
- Carries out special projects as may be required.
STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- University undergraduate degree in political science, public affairs, government relations, social sciences, communications or any related discipline.
- 5 to 8 years of experience of relevant and similar work with NGOs, interest groups, government agencies or unions.
- Experience providing advice to senior management, leading in strategy, planning, campaign development and implementation.
- Experience campaigning to advance social and/or labour issues.
- Legal experience with bargaining and/or management experience would be an asset.
- Equivalent combinations of education and/or experience will be considered.
- Management experience will be considered an asset.
- Bilingualism (French/English) considered a strong asset.
DECISION MAKING (COMPLEXITY)
- Tasks are somewhat diversified, involving the manipulation of several variables within a changing environment and may be complex in nature within diverse environments (e.g. political, economic, social) and may have an impact on the long-range strategies of the organization.

MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides direct supervision to unionized labour relations including:
- Research Analyst
- Communications Officer
- May be involved in the recruitment and performance management of staff in accordance with the collective agreement.

- Requires ability to work independently with organizational and prioritization skills.
- Works under general direction and is guided by broad policies and general objectives.
CONTACTS
Requires the ability to build and maintain productive relationships and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders.
Internal:
- Internal contacts include the President, Executive Director and staff at the AJC.
- Contacts include senior levels of management and may include dealing with controversial/sensitive interpersonal skills.
External:
- External contacts may include representatives for the Governing Council, AJC Members, employer contacts, union contacts, etc.
- Contact may be complex, with potential for demanding interpersonal skills.
Working Environment:
Relatively constant sitting, keyboarding, and working at a computer.
The AJC is an employer with flexible work arrangements for its staff.
Physical / Sensory Effort:
- Work is fast-paced, timelines are tight, and tasks are performed under pressure.
- Sustained concentration is required.
COMPENSATION AND OTHER BENEFITS
- COMPETITIVE SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE: $106,419.27 to $152,671.68
- GROUP BENEFITS: Health, Dental, Life, Disability
- PENSION PLAN: CAAT
- VACATION: 4 weeks/year to start in addition to December holiday season and other paid leave
- JOB TERM: Indeterminate Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
