About us

Kids Kottage provides care and shelter for children who may be facing a crisis. Established in 1995, Kids Kottage is a not-for-profit and charitable organization licensed to provide residential care for children aged 0-10.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a part-time Family Support Worker (Childcare) for 3-4 evening shifts per week. Evening shifts are 5.5 hours long from 5:00pm to 10:30pm. Flexibility is required in the availability for evening shifts during the week with occasional weekends and holidays.

Family Support Workers are responsible for exemplary, trauma-informed childcare. The successful candidate will have experience in a childcare or early learning setting that uses leading practices, such as the Reggio Emilia philosophy of care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accepts and supports the Kids Kottage Foundation philosophy and adheres to all policies, procedures and relevant legislation.
  • Maintains all required daily documentation including developmental screenings, daily child logs, and incident reporting.
  • Implements quality childcare activities in alignment with the Kids Kottage Practice Framework.
  • Contributes to a positive team environment.
  • Treats children and families with respect, dignity, and maintains their confidentiality.
  • Employs positive working relationships with colleagues, volunteers, practicum students, and supervisors.
  • Develops and implements safe, creative, developmentally appropriate, indoor and outdoor activities for the children.
  • Attends the daily routines of children (feeding, toileting, bathing) and supervises children during playtime, meals and naptime.
  • Administers medications as per Kids Kottage Foundation policy and procedures and attends to the medical or dietary needs of the children.
  • Uses evidence-based strategies to ensure a trauma-informed, culturally relevant experience for all children admitted to the Crisis Nursery, in alignment with the Kids Kottage Practice Framework.
  • Demonstrates understanding of children’s emotional needs and integrates them into care plans and play in a developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Responds to crisis calls and supports admissions and discharges as needed.
  • Performs housekeeping and meal preparation duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Holds a degree or diploma in a human services field (Early Childhood Development Certification preferred) or related education.
  • At least 2 years of childcare experience.
  • Provides and maintains clear Intervention Record Checks and Police Information Checks with Vulnerable Sector according to policy and procedures.
  • Current certification in First Aid Level C.
  • Knowledge of leading practices in child development, such as Reggio Emilia philosophical approach, inclusive practices, and trauma-informed care.
  • Has the ability to lift and carry infants and children and complete household cleaning.

Strong interpersonal skills for building trust with children and families through a trauma-informed approach prioritizing emotional safety and responding with empathy.
  • Routine & Safety Management: Follows established routines and procedures for meals, naps, hygiene, and transitions. Maintains a clean, safe, and organized environment, including support tasks like sanitizing toys and meal preparation. Follows health and safety protocols, including licensing accreditation standards, and emergency procedures.
  • Professionalism & Ethics: Follows ethical standards and confidentiality guidelines. Engages in continuous learning and professional development. Works effectively as part of a team. Demonstrates reliability, responsibility, and integrity.
Work Environment
  • Crisis Nursery, located at 13308 101 Street Edmonton, T5E 4G3.
  • The Crisis Nursery provides 24-hour care for children 10 and under.
  • 16.5 to 22 hours per week, flexibility is required in availability for shifts in the evening with the occasional weekend and holiday. Evening shifts are from 5:00pm-10:30pm.
