Main Focus Areas
- The Senior Pharmacist will oversee the provision of pharmaceutical services, including medication dispensing and clinical support, to patients and the healthcare team across hospital, retail, and surgical areas. The incumbent will ensure patient needs are met responsibly, efficiently, and cost‑effectively through effective team leadership, while upholding the highest professional and ethical standards in line with GPP guidelines, SAPC regulations, and Lenmed policies—implementing, enforcing, and driving SOPs for quality and compliance.
Key Performance Areas: (include but are not limited to)
- Oversee and participate in daily dispensing processes (hospital, retail, wards, theatre, and emergency cupboard) following GPP procedures, verifying prescriptions, and ensuring 1-hour Rx/TTO turnaround.
- Ensure maximum patient safety by providing advice on medicine selection, dosage, interactions, side effects, and therapeutic effects during ward rounds and clinical programs like antimicrobial stewardship.
- Supervise and control acquisition, storage, dispensing, receiving, procurement (POs, GRNs, min/max levels, FEFO/FIFO), and expiry management of medicines by the team.
- Assist in staff management, including training, mentoring, orientation, rosters, Kronos, skills audits, and disciplinary actions.
- Conduct administrative, HR/IR, housekeeping tasks independently, including supervising daily cash-ups, prescription filing (5-year retention), monthly reports, and maintaining audit files.
- Act as custodian for Schedule 5 & 6 drugs per legal requirements, including quarterly audits, balancing, ward reconciliations, and Drug Register entries.
- Liaise with nursing, doctors, and multidisciplinary teams on operational changes, challenges, out-of-stocks, incidents, and prescription issues.
- Manage stock via monthly cycle counts, quarterly stock takes, discrepancy investigations, dead/slow-moving stock monitoring, and out-of-stock follow-ups.
- Drive quality assurance, risk management, SOP/policy development, complaint resolution, and compliance with SAPC/DOH standards.
- Provide professional customer service, participate in projects (e.g., Pharmacy Week), and maintain a clean, compliant environment.
- Act in Pharmacy Manager's absence, implementing strategies, QIPs, and ensuring profitable, patient-focused services.
Post Requirements: (include but are not limited to)
- Essential Qualifications: BPharm degree (or equivalent NQF Level 7 pharmaceutical qualification) and current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years' experience in a private hospital pharmacy environment, with sound knowledge of pharmacy operations including dispensing, stock control, and Schedule 5/6 management.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in SAP and COMPHARM systems (advantageous).
