Senior Lecturer in MSc Physician Associate and Placement Lead

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Lecturer (Teaching) and Clinical Placement Lead with the vision, commitment and academic ambition and capacity to contribute to the development of clinical placements and the delivery of Physician Associate education.

Main duties of the job

You should be a clinician, and this can be from any appropriate discipline (Physician Associate, Nursing, Allied Health or a doctor). You need to be clinically knowledgeable having at least two years post qualification experience, and be registered with the appropriate regulatory body. It is expected that you enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team and have a passion for developing and teaching healthcare students. You will be required to support Physician Associate students academically and in practice, this will include practice visits to ensure the achievement of the Physician Associate standards and to support the placement educators. You will be part of an innovative and supportive team that focuses on the educational needs of its students utilising innovative teaching methodologies. In addition, you will provide academic support at programme level and, co-ordinate, develop and supervise a range of activities effectively as module lead.

Job responsibilities
  1. To contribute to teaching and related activities for the Physician Associate programme and other courses within the School, drawing on own area of specialism to design teaching sessions which maximise the integration of theory to clinical practice.
  2. To lead module MSPA 4028 which is the core clinical placement module during students second year within the Physician Associate programme.
  3. To design and develop innovative and inspiring learning materials and assessments specifically related to MSPA 4028 but also collaboratively with other staff teaching and examining students across the course.
  4. To participate fully in curriculum development work including planning, development and evaluation.
  5. To act as a Personal Academic Tutor.
  6. To act as a dissertation supervisor and assess dissertations as requested.
  7. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the School and University.
  8. To participate in annual staff development and review processes.
  9. To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of work, individually or collectively as part of a team in accordance with quality assurance procedures.
  10. To participate fully in the life of the School, College and University, by engaging in representational and ambassadorial activities in support of the School's activities and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of School.
  11. Advise on, seek and secure, new and on‑going clinical placement opportunities for students on the pre‑registration Physician Associate programme. Develop and prepare appropriate clinical placements including clinical tutor briefings, documentation such as Tutor and Placement Guides, educational audit of placements and regular clinical liaison with clinical placement leads.
  12. Play a key role in placement evaluation, the subsequent action plan and placement / tutor development and support to ensure students have a continuing positive experience on placement that fulfils their learning goals.
  13. Work closely with the Physician Associate Course Lead to innovate new ways to secure and deliver clinical placement learning opportunities, in line with professional body requirements.
  14. Collaborate with clinical partners and academic staff to ensure that quality assurance requirements related to clinical placement experience including those specified by the professional body are understood and fulfilled across all variations of placement provision. To ensure students, staff and placements are aware of the Raising Concerns Policy and that quarterly reports are maintained and actions undertaken appropriately.
  15. Conduct initial review and risk assessments of new placements, provide training and updates to new and existing clinical partners, in line with professional body standards and requirements. Provide effective support and facilitation of learning to students, clinical assessors, clinical supervisors, managers and others within clinical practice settings to facilitate the training for the practice related elements of assessment.
  16. Liaise with the Placement Support Team (PLAST) regarding the scope and capacity of on‑going and new placement areas, providing regular updates to the Senior Leadership Team.
  17. To have oversight of Physician Associate clinical placement allocations, ensuring that all PSRB requirements have been met, relevant UW policies and process have been followed and students have appropriate opportunities to complete their clinical skills and competencies sign offs and portfolio requirements.
  18. To contribute to the on‑going development of close working relationships that the University of Worcester has established with local National Health Service (NHS) trusts, primary care, private, independent and voluntary sector service provider agencies and with experts by experience, service‑users and carers, through active participation in meetings and work groups as appropriate.
  19. The post requires clinical liaison with the Health Services which support the Physician Associate programme which may incur travel across a wide geographical area.
  20. Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.
  21. Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety, and well‑being and that of other staff and students.
  22. Carry out these duties in a manner that promotes equality of opportunity and supports diversity and inclusion and takes into account the University's commitment to environmentally sustainable ways of working.
Person Specification
Experience
  • Minimum of two years post-qualification experience.
  • Experience of teaching in a university or clinical setting.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development, and commitment to engage in scholarly activity.

Qualifications
  • MSc / PGDip Physician Associate Studies or other equivalent healthcare professional qualification.
  • Registration with an appropriate Professional Body e.g. GMC.
  • PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (or equivalent) and / or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy / Advance HE.*
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team.
  • ICT competence for teaching and administration purposes.
  • Evidence of (or willingness to) making a substantial contribution to both student recruitment and support activities.
