Band 3 Bank Mental Health Care Assistant For Frimley Site Long Days!

Are you caring, considerate, can work under pressure and have a passion to support a patient when they are at the most vulnerable?

There will be a total of 9 days paid training. On successfully completing the training you can then pick up bank shifts at MHCA B3 level.

The Band 3 Bank Mental Health Care Assistant role supports and cares for patients with various mental health conditions through close engagement and observation. The bank worker role will require experience of delivering the CA role to high standard and experience in de-escalating patients through excellent communicational skills. Although this role is focussed on the mental health support of enhanced care to the patient group, this role will still involve providing all personal care as required for the patients e.g., toileting, feeding, hygiene needs, and taking vital signs. These roles are to ensure we have the appropriate level of supervision and observation in place for those patients who require enhanced care observation. These circumstances may be due to the following examples (This list is not exhaustive):

• the patient is acutely physically or mentally ill
• the patient may be likely to wander and/or abscond
• the patient may be confused, at risk of falls or at risk of self-harm
• the patient may be acutely ill and/or requiring frequent observations
• the patient may have expressed suicidal ideation

• To undertake enhanced care duties for our patients as guided by their care plan and patient enhanced care risk assessment. Unsupervised assigned tasks within the ward/clinical team and report the outcomes to a qualified nurse.
• Assist in the provision of care both through verbal de-escalation skills and wider conversational communicational skills.
• To provide support, where appropriate, to relatives and carers as required.
• To support the qualified nurses and be directed and supervised by them to undertake assigned enhanced care tasks.
• Develop and maintain a good working relationship with patients during your shift and to always ensure patient safety.

Please note this role is only open for bank work at our Frimley Hospital Site for long days only.

• Educated to GCSE level or equivalent (with a minimum of 5 A-E qualifications which must include Maths and English).
• NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualification or demonstrate experience/development.
• Care Certificate.

• At least one year experience as a Healthcare Support Worker or equivalent experience.
• Empathy for individuals who have experienced mental health problems and the ability to cope with challenging behaviour.
• Able to provide quality care responsive to the patient's needs without close supervision and taking the initiative within protocols, policies, and care plans.
• Previous experience working in a mental health service.
• Basic understanding of risk.

• Able to listen to different views.
• Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of patients.
• Sympathetic and considerate towards patients, carers, and relatives.
• Act in ways that support equality and diversity.

• Able to work flexible shift requirements.
• Work bank shifts every six months to remain on the temporary staffing pool.
• Able to demonstrate an awareness and responsibility whilst recognising the impact frequent exposure to distressing circumstances has on care and compassion.
• Able to work on various wards and support patients with different mental presentations.
• To be honest and maintain professional standards when engaging with vulnerable patients.
