Purpose
Supports the global business strategy and ensures that human resources strategies and programs align with the overall goals, values and Human Resources philosophies of the Bank’s and of Scotiabank Mexico.
Responsible for developing and implementing short- and long-term Human Resources strategies, plans, policies and programs to support Scotiabank Mexico’s (SBM) overall business objectives. Working as a key member of the senior management team, the role contributes to the success and the profitability of the country by building and maintaining a workforce that is skilled, motivated, capable and committed to delivering country´s strategies for all businesses (Retail, Corporate and Commercial Banking, Microfinance, Insurance, Wealth Management and GBM) and support functions, throughout the subsidiaries within the Group Scotiabank.
Responsibilities
- Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
- Actively participates as a strategic partner and advisor to senior management team in Mexico, contributing to the development of short- and long-term strategies; takes a lead role in determining the major HR implications of those strategies, balancing business perspective with the needs of individual employees and alignment with the Bank’s and HR objectives.
- As an integral member of the Senior Management Team, act as the Business Unit´s Consultant/Advocate to this group, providing advice and counsel in the development of the annual HR Strategy / Business Plan and in the development of companywide programs and initiatives. Incumbent will actively influence decisions affecting the business and support areas which he/she represents.
- Defines and develops the Mexican HR strategy and corresponding tactical execution plans to ensure alignment with the values and HR philosophies and achievement of the Bank´s overall goals. Identifies people’s capabilities required for current and future success in Scotiabank, taking actions to attract, retain, and grow the talent required through:
- Leadership Resource Planning / Management
- Performance measurement / management
- Developmental priorities and career opportunities
- New / revised reward and recognition programs
- Developing employee training products and solutions
- Identifies and leads the implementation of HR programs that will support the success of the local short and long- term strategies and ensure they continue to meet BNS current/future needs, reflect the corporate values and adhere to guidelines. This will be achieved by:
- Maintaining an awareness of future/emerging trends and best practices in HR and through ongoing liaison with HR peers within and outside the Scotiabank Group;
- Conducting initial diagnostic assessments/needs analyses of business objectives;
- Developing and championing comprehensive recommendations for solutions to Executives and senior management teams;
- Assigning resources, establishing project leaders and core teams, defining roles, tasks and expectations; and,
- Monitoring HR programs and processes to ensure they meet the stakeholders’ future needs and deliver intended outcomes.
- Act as advisor to the CEO and the Heads of the different units, his/her management team and senior line management, providing advice and counsel, guidance and coaching on sensitive, confidential and complex HR issues.
- Plan recommend and manage the budget for the total human resources expenses in the country and other financial measures related with the general business and the related directly with the human resources management in general.
- Represent Scotiabank at the Bankers Association of Mexico in the matter of Human Resources and with labor authorities and other Human Resources Associations in the country.
- Responsible of the relationship with the Bank´s Unions and its collective bargains.
- Responsible for providing induction to the position to each new contributor to the team, (whether for new income, promotion or side change), providing general information about the GFSBI, (vision, mission and culture) as well as explaining its job description, key roles and objectives in order for the collaborator to place their role within the GFSBI by strengthening their sense of belonging and reduce the time of the learning curve.
- Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
- Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
- Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviors; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team
Education / Experience / Other information
Complexity of the Function: This position´s major accountability is to ensure that a quality workforce is available at all times within Scotiabank Mexico to most effectively meet the everchanging needs and demands of business partners and to enhance our competitiveness with special focus on leadership and emerging talent.
The position plays a pivotal role in managing the evolution of change by contributing to the proactive development of policies, plans and strategies to meet the changing company environment, communicating information and implementing Bank HR policies. While the position is in a constant liaison with Global HR and their expertise areas, the position has to take appropriate actions on issues including: recruitment, training, career plans and leadership, performance management, total compensation, employee relations programs and bargaining with unions, communications for all the Mexican operations, payroll and data bases for the whole staff, taxes and labor/legal solutions.
To achieve this, the incumbent must have:
- Thorough knowledge of the whole business in the country supported from an organizational and business perspective.
- Knowledge of the Bank´s business objectives, policies, internal operating environment and related philosophies.
- Thorough understanding of the International Business plans, their current status and emerging trends within the financial services industry and their implications from an HR perspective.
- Strong appreciation of the challenges faced in policy development in light of the rapidly changing and increasingly complex legislative and working environment and regulatory revision.
- Lead the diversity and inclusion programs and been cognizant as they affect both Scotiabank and its employees.
- Excellent diagnostic skills followed by strong ability to evaluate options and develop solutions to complex and multi-dimensional problems or issues.
- Strategic thinking capability to create an HR strategy for the country.
- Excellent communications skills to be applied across all the units in SBM.
- Coaching capability to foster and develop a strong team.
- Strong cultural leadership skills.
He / she must maintain an overall familiarity with the activities of the Senior Management Team to ensure coordinated and seamless delivery and to regularly advise the Director General (CEO) on trends, issues and results. His/her position has significant impact on successfully implementing business strategy through people.
