Job Summary:
The Writing Centre Tutor works with the Writing Centre Coordinator to identify and address students’ academic writing, research, and presentation skills needs at the Vancouver campus. Responsibilities include providing academic writing and research support in the Writing Centre, delivering academic skills workshops, promoting academic support services to students through presentations and workshops, and assisting in organizing testing appointments.
Supervision Received:
The Writing Centre Tutor reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and works closely with the Writing Centre Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
- Provides one-on-one and small group tutoring in academic writing, presentation skills, and academic research skills.
- Develops and facilitates workshops in foundational academic skills, library research, and academic integrity.
- Monitors and manages Writing Centre appointments.
- Assists in developing and delivering questionnaires that monitor satisfaction with services provided.
- Promotes academic services at Orientation and at other appropriate venues.
- Develops Writing Centre related content for FDU social media platforms.
- Aids students in understanding academic policies and procedures.
- Assists the Testing Centre Coordinator in setting up and managing testing appointments.
- Develops and facilitates workshops in language skills and test-taking for students at or near graduation as needed based on government rules and regulations.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Completed (or close to completing) a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in which English was the medium of study.
- Fluent speaker of English and proven ability to research and write college-level academic papers in English.
- Experience tutoring undergraduate and graduate students in academic writing and presentations.
- Experience presenting academic skills workshops.
- A strong work ethic, a calm demeanour, attention to detail, and strong organizational ability.
- Experience in the post-secondary education systems and familiarity with academic policies and procedures.
- Canadian residency or work permit required.
- Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills: can articulate academic conventions related to academic writing, in-class participation, and academic presentations suitable for US and Canadian academic settings.
- Demonstrates intercultural competence and communicates effectively in culturally diverse environments with empathy and open-mindedness.
- Knowledge of academic policies and procedures and is capable of communicating and guiding students in applying them.
- Ability to develop and facilitate academic skills workshops and guide international students in succeeding in a North American academic setting.
- Ability to use job-related technology: e.g., MS Office, Writing Centre booking platform, and the library databases.
- Ability to monitor and report on student use of and satisfaction with services provided.
