Take charge of vegetation management at the City of Edmonton! The seasonal Pest Control Operator (PCO) with the Landscape Services team is responsible for the field supervision of labourers involved in the mixing and application of herbicides of a client-based environment in accordance with the City’s Integrated Pest Management Policy and Weed Management Plan.
What will you do?
- Assign, supervise, and participate in the application of herbicides to manage noxious, prohibited noxious and nuisance weeds on client assets.
- Calibrate equipment to ensure proper rate of application and perform minor maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Investigate and attempt to resolve complaints concerning regulated and nuisance weeds.
- Maintain daily chemical record sheets by listing what pesticides were used, locations and quantities, and types of weed encountered, weather condition, etc.
- Assist in the supervision of Labourers in the field inspection, chemical mixing and application.
- Mentor and coach staff in the field and may have an opportunity to act in the Licensed Crew Leader role as required.
- Ensure safe handling in accordance with herbicide labels and Safety Data Sheets.
- Ensure proper application via calibration and following approved label rates.
- Ensure all staff trained adequately in application best practices, weed identification.
- Ensure all staff receive proper equipment training for equipment required in summer and winter seasons.
- Participate and perform safety inspections.
Qualifications
- Completion of at least Grade 10.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in pesticide application and related pest control work, including demonstrated supervisory potential.
- Emergency First Aid certification.
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification.
Skills required for success:
- Ability to implement annual work plan.
- Ability to communicate clearly to assign and supervise work.
- Ability to maintain all required licenses.
- Methods, materials, equipment used for management of vegetation.
- Knowledge of City of Edmonton Parks Operations hazard assessment and controls, proper pesticide use and current industry standards, laws and regulations related to the transport, handling, and application of herbicides in parkland, non-cropland, and industrial sites.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions including City policies, OHS requirements and WHMIS.
- Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor maintenance on application equipment.

Conditions of Employment:
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator. Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position.
