SUMMARY:

West Toronto Housing Help Services is one of eleven Housing Help Hubs funded by the City of Toronto to provide Housing Help services to residents in the west end of the city. We are a project of West Toronto Community Legal Services, a non-profit community based legal clinic. Our housing help workers assist homeless and at-risk clients in securing housing in the west end of Toronto. Our rent bank workers provide eviction prevention services by assisting individuals and families complete applications to access the Rent Bank grant program.

We are seeking a new Rent Bank Worker to work 28 hrs a week. Under the supervision of the Manager of Housing Help Services, the successful candidate will provide assistance to individuals and families facing temporary financial hardship to prevent eviction and ensure housing stability.

The successful candidate will start as soon as possible and will work both in office and remotely as part of our Housing Help Team.

The wage is $27.43/hour (28 hours per week), pursuant to our collective agreement, and an extended health benefit package after the first 3 months of employment. The position also receives a 5.5% RRSP contribution.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct screening, intake and assessment for applicants who need financial assistance with rental arrears or rent deposits
• Provide information and guidance to clients on application procedures
• Make calls to landlords to confirm arrears and verify outstanding rent balances
• Process and complete Rent Bank grant applications on web-based program in a timely and efficient manner
• Support other Housing Team staff in accessing Rent Bank and other supports
• Assist clients in completing housing applications including Access to Housing (formerly known as Housing Connections), MyAccesstoHousingTO portal, Access Point, Toronto Community Housing, Co-ops, and Market rent applications.
• Facilitate group sessions to clients on the navigation and registration of the MyAccesstoHousing TO portal, including Expressing Interest in the Choice Based Cycles and completing Annual Reviews
• Work collaboratively with legal clinic staff to support tenants facing termination of tenancy owing to arrears
• Attend sector meetings including the Rent Bank Operational Committee meetings
• Maintain accurate records of client interactions and application statuses in accordance with program protocols: update clients’ files on multiple databases in a timely basis
• Perform other duties as assigned by the program manager

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• BSW, Community Worker or Social Service Worker certificate.
• Experience working with diverse urban, marginalized, and low-income persons
• Experience with providing housing related services
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure
• Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality
• Good knowledge of available community resources within the City of Toronto
