What is the opportunity?
The RBCx Strategy & Investments Team is looking to hire an Associate to work within their multi-disciplinary Investments team. This individual is someone who is very curious about innovation, technology, and the venture capital industry, interested in furthering their career path within private capital markets, passionate about finance and investing within both direct and indirect equity mandates, has an interest in corporate strategy and helping build / launch new products tailored to the venture capital industry, and loves to read, research, listen and learn about all aspects of the private and venture capital industry more broadly.
What will you do?
Specifically, the Associate will be the first hire on RBCx’s Investments team, and will report directly into the Director, Capital Investments. More specifically, this individual will be responsible for both contributing to and leading the following initiatives:
Indirect & VC Fund Investing: Will learn the business of venture capital through the lens of supporting RBCx’s venture capital fund investment strategy. Specifically, this individual will be responsible for supporting the due diligence and evaluation process for RBCx’s new and existing strategic fund partnerships.
Direct Equity Investing: Will learn the business of venture capital through the lens of supporting RBCx’s direct equity investment strategy. Specifically, this individual will be responsible for supporting the sourcing, due diligence, and evaluation process for RBCx’s strategic direct equity investment.
Product & Capital Strategy: This individual will be responsible for working with internal RBC and RBCx stakeholders, as well as external VC partners, on establishing new products and capital strategies that are designed to support Canada’s venture capital ecosystem.
Data & Reporting: This individual will be responsible for playing a role in supporting the strategic quarterly reporting for all of RBCx’s VC fund investments and working with RBCx Banking on identifying collaboration opportunities.
Thought Leadership: This individual will be responsible for helping RBCx continue to build its reputation as a thought leader across Canadian venture and the venture capital asset class more broadly. Specifically, this will entail ideating on new thought leadership ideas, supporting with data analysis and consolidation, data visualization, and report drafting.
Market Development: This individual will be responsible for attending various external Industry conferences and events, building relationships and networking with key individuals across Canada’s venture capital ecosystem.
In addition to the responsibilities above, this individual will also play a role in working alongside the broader RBCx Strategy & Investments team to support in identifying and assessing strategic corporate development opportunities for business units across RBC, working with those business unit leaders and other internal RBC stakeholders.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-haves
Undergraduate degree, preferably in commerce or business administration
2+ years of experience in a role within the technology sector, ideally in venture capital, private equity, management consulting, or as an operator at a startup
Interested in building a strong foundation and unique skill set for a longer-term career in venture capital and/or corporate strategy
High degree of maturity, integrity and curiosity
Strong research, problem solving, and analytical skills
Strong proficiency in Excel as well as PowerPoint
Willingness to work across the organization in support of ad hoc projects as required
Comfortable working through ambiguity
Nice-to-haves
Experience working within a small team and building out initiatives from the ground up
Experience with data visualization and design tools (ie. Tableau)
