The RDH is in a special position to provide our patients the most important health service possible. The hygienist assists the dentist in providing oral health to patients by cleaning, scaling and polishing teeth. Takes and processes X-rays. Records evaluation of mouth conditions and extent of prophylaxis on dental chart to provide dentist with information for more complete diagnoses and subsequent treatment if needed. Provides the patient with ongoing preventive oral care through patient education, treatment and reinforcement of the doctor's treatment plan.

• Support with patient flow and keep the schedule on track.
• Review the patient’s Medical History at each visit and recognize contraindications to dental treatment.
• Thoroughly examine oral tissues and accurately record findings on the patient’s chart.
• Record any teeth and/or existing restorations diagnosed by the Dentist as showing decay or causing discomfort.
• Accurately measure and record pocket depths, following RCDSO & CDHO guidelines.
• Relate well to patients, demonstrating sensitivity to all patient concerns.
• Provide thorough explanations of dental hygiene procedures necessary for the patient’s treatment.
• Detect and remove calculus to create a smooth surface for gingival healing.
• Remove plaque and stains by polishing to resist colonization of microorganisms.
• Apply Fluoride on appropriate patients post-scaling and polishing.
• Educate patients on oral hygiene techniques for home care.
• Discuss and demonstrate oral hygiene instructions effectively.
• Motivate patients towards oral health through positive communication.
• Perform scaling, root planning, and gingival curettage with minimal discomfort.
• Document intended hygiene procedures and accurately record treatment at each visit.
• Maintain a safe and pleasant environment for patients.
• Ensure proper maintenance of equipment, instruments, and supplies.
• Communicate cooperatively with staff and dentists, using active listening skills.
• Educate team members on optimal hygiene treatment standards.
• Follow dentist’s orders regarding X-ray procedures.
• Adhere to infection control protocols as outlined by RCDSO, CDHO, and the government of Ontario.

• Graduated from Dental Hygiene Program.
• Demonstrates personal drive and determination.

• Solves problems that hinder team performance.

• Follows Health and Safety Act and WHMIS regulations.
• Maintains CPR certification annually.
• Adheres to PIPEDA protocols.
• Be an effective team member by arriving on time, being prepared, and respecting fellow team members.
• Participate in ongoing continuing education for development.
