A Practical Nurse (also known as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in some regions) is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or physicians. Practical nurses work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and home care, playing an essential role in patient care.

• Patient Care Skills: Providing basic nursing care, such as administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and assisting with personal hygiene.
• Clinical Skills: Proficiency in taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) and assisting with procedures such as wound care, catheter insertion, and giving injections or vaccines.
• Communication Skills: Effectively communicating with patients, families, and healthcare teams to provide the best care possible and documenting patient care and maintaining accurate medical records.
• Compassion and Empathy: Understanding the emotional and physical needs of patients, especially in sensitive situations, and providing emotional support to patients and their families during times of illness or recovery.
• Attention to Detail: Observing and documenting any changes in a patient’s condition and following care protocols to ensure accuracy when administering medications or treatments.
• Time Management: Prioritizing tasks efficiently to provide timely care and managing multiple patient assignments while ensuring high standards of care.
• Medical Terminology Knowledge: Understanding and using medical terminology correctly to communicate with other healthcare professionals and explaining medical conditions to patients and their families in understandable terms.
• Teamwork: Working effectively with RNs, doctors, and other healthcare staff to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
• Patient Safety and Hygiene: Ensuring infection control practices and being vigilant about patient safety.

Responsibilities of a Practical Nurse

1. Monitoring Patient Health: Taking and recording vital signs, observing patients for any changes in condition, and reporting them to a registered nurse or physician.
2. Assisting with Daily Activities: Helping patients with bathing, grooming, dressing, and other personal care needs, and assisting patients with mobility.
3. Administering Medications: Administering prescribed medications to patients and monitoring for any adverse reactions.
4. Wound Care and Dressings: Changing bandages or dressing wounds and assisting with the care of surgical sites or chronic wounds.
5. Providing Patient Education: Educating patients about their health conditions and giving guidance on managing chronic conditions.
6. Documentation and Record Keeping: Keeping accurate and up-to-date records of patient care and documenting nursing interventions.
7. Collaborating with Healthcare Teams: Working with RNs, doctors, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement patient care plans.
8. Assisting with Procedures: Assisting with diagnostic tests and preparing patients for medical tests or procedures.
9. Maintaining a Safe and Clean Environment: Ensuring that patient rooms and common areas are clean and safe.
