Position Title: Preschool Educator 1
Reporting To: Principal of the Centre
Summary: The Beginning Preschool Educator creates a secure and quality learning environment for children through fostering meaningful relationships with them. She supports the holistic development of children by implementing a developmentally and culturally appropriate curricula, aiming to nurture trusting and respectful relationships with the children. She works closely with her colleagues to build partnerships with parents and families, and actively engages in Centre initiatives to support its collaborative efforts with the community, contributing to a culture of collaboration and collegiality. As a reflective Early Childhood Educator, she participates in professional development and service quality improvement activities.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Responsibilities in the Centre
- Apply understanding of how children (birth to age 8) learn and develop.
- Plan, supervise and implement programme activities in the classroom and beyond classroom settings aligned to curriculum frameworks.
- Evaluate teaching, learning and caregiving approaches aligned to curriculum frameworks.
- Apply classroom management strategies and strategies to observe and document children’s learning.
- Inculcate the core values and early childhood education through classroom activities and programmes.
- Set up quality learning environments and be responsible for periodically changing the classroom displays, charts, decorations, and learning environment before a new term starts and maintain them in good condition.
- Guide the development and enhancement of self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness and confidence.
- Adhere to health, safety, nutritional and hygiene standards and procedures to create a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for children to work and play.
- Carry out routine care duties with safety and hygiene standards in accordance to SOP.
- Establish home-centre partnerships to promote the school and its philosophy.
- Engage in collaborative projects with community stakeholders to promote the school and its philosophy.
- Engage in continuous learning and reflective practice.
- Demonstrate ethical behaviour and professionalism.
- Collaborate with colleagues to foster positive workplace relations.
- Engage in centre initiatives and programmes like outings, fieldtrips, newsletters etc.
- Demonstrate understanding and uphold the centre’s vision, mission and core values.
- To undertake other related duties when assigned (E.g. Render your support in other classes in the absence of the respective class teacher or when the respective class teacher has been assigned with other duties).
- Responsibilities to the Children
- Customise and implement differentiated teaching and learning strategies to meet the diverse needs of children.
- Evaluate lessons taught to the children to ensure their progress.
- Attend to all children’s physical care and emotional well-being by responding to and comforting children who are distressed or unwell.
- Foster trusting, respectful relationships with children through positive interactions that reflect the philosophy and policies of the school, and in accordance with ECDA regulation.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for the diversity of social & cultural backgrounds of the children in your care.
- Communicate with the parents by writing comments on the child’s well-being, progress, etc in the Parents-Teacher Communication Booklet.
- Systematically observe and document children’s holistic development and prepare a developmental portfolio for each child and complete progress report by end of semester.
- Prepare developmentally appropriate teaching aids and source materials to support children’s learning in various curriculum areas.
- Provide parents with materials to help them facilitate their children’s development at home. (E.g. Take-home kit)
Qualifications and Training Requirements
Either of the following:
- Diploma in Child Psychology and Early Education (CPEE)
- Diploma in Early Childhood Education (ECH)
- Diploma in Early Childhood Studies (DECS)
- Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education (DECCE-T)
- Professional Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education (PDECCE)
- Diploma (Conversion) in Early Childhood Teaching (DCECT)
- Professional Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education (Childcare) (PDECCE (CC))

Considerations for Promotion/ Advancement/ Job Placement
- Serve the organization for at least 1 year or 3 years of EC experience
- Display exemplary work performance and obtained “B+” and above for latest performance appraisal (annual appraisal or confirmation appraisal where applicable)
- Recommended by immediate superior for promotion
- Is directly responsible for a children group size of 15 or more for a period of at least 6 months
- Assist or partake in any ECDA projects or Centre initiatives
- Completed 25 hours of CPD training (with at least one pre-requisite external organized course listed below attended) in a calendar year
