We are seeking a capable, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our friendly and dedicated team in the Cellular Pathology Department at The Royal Stoke University Hospital.

You must have full HCPC registration for appointment as a Senior Biomedical Scientist along with an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology or equivalent and either an MSc, Higher Specialist Diploma or equivalent in biomedical science plus additional specialist training relevant to the post.

1. Responsible as leading BMS for a specialist area / section. To manage and co-ordinate the day-to-day technical activities of the laboratory or main specialist section; including supervision and training of scientific and support staff in area of work.
2. To be an efficient and flexible member of the laboratory team providing a high quality diagnostic service through specialist scientific and technical activities commensurate with the training and education of a Biomedical Scientist registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
3. To provide specialist advice to clinicians (and to other laboratory users).
4. To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health and Safety and Quality.
5. To maintain competence to practice and to improve professional expertise through engagement in Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

• BSc, Registration and Specialist
• MSc, HSD or alternative
• Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
• Evidence of continued professional development (CPD).
• Knowledge of relevant laboratory data management systems and policies. Understands the importance of data integrity and confidentiality
• Knowledge of relevant quality procedures.
• Health and Safety knowledge.
• Up-to-date knowledge of national Clinical pathology Accreditation standards and their application (as relevant to the specialty).
• Good awareness of current issues within Pathology locally and nationally.
• Attended formal management course

• A minimum of 5 years post-registration practical experience of working in relevant Pathology discipline in a busy laboratory environment.
• One or more sub-specialised analytical or clinical areas
• Training a range of ‘students’ e.g. medical , scientific and support staff
• Working with complex and specialist laboratory equipment.
• Maintenance on a variety of laboratory equipment
• Participation in audit and service development projects.
• Active liaison with clinicians and healthcare professionals.
• Working in a team and alone Intermediate and accurate IT skills.
• Have good manual dexterity and hand-eye co-ordination skills for accuracy and fine adjustment of equipment.
• Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
• Analytical skills with the ability to work in a methodical and systematic way.
• Effectively apply skills and knowledge
• Work with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to their review
• Work within safe systems of work and report any deficiencies in those systems.
• Experience of working in an acute NHS Trust
• Experience in presenting data to clinical and scientific audiences in a range of formats.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective Pathology networks with internal and external colleagues.

• Ability and willingness to fulfil the travel requirements of the post if/as relevant – primary place of work as per JD but occasionally may be reasonably asked to work at another site where the Trust has responsibility for Pathology Services.
