PWM Starting In 2024 And What You Should Know About It
If you are reading this, you know one of many things happening in the security industry section. There is an improved Progressive Wage Model (PWM) for Security in Singapore.
So, you must consider what it means to you if you are a Singaporean holding a security license in Singapore.
Two decisions were made in 2023: one to remove the Overtime exemption on security agencies and give contracted working hours to get a base salary for the officer's grade. Security agencies benefit from getting out of Part 4 of the MOM Law that security officers must take one off day a week; with that out of the way, a security officer can take more days off continuously (from one day to up to four days).
The security officer also gets an increase in their salary. However, for the first year, SMS Security will have a slight increase in the overall gross salary. Why? Firstly, clients cannot "tahan" the rapid rise in the contracting of security services. So you will see the salary increases after 2025 after security agencies adjust to the government's plans for PWM in the security market. With that, maybe security officers may negotiate with security agencies for better working hours.
Why PWM Now?
If you notice that Singapore doesn't have a recession problem but an inflation and affordability problem, meaning if you take out all your expenses for the things you need (housing, transport, food, etc.) from your salary, what do you have left? That is a bad situation if the answer is "IOU" to many different companies.
So, the PWM is supposed to help you win over inflation and get enough so you don't have any "IOU" with any companies if you put in the hours to work. It is also supposed to attract younger people into the security industry.
New Realities In The Security Market In Singapore
More Pay Means More Training To Go
Not too long ago, a person with no security experience could join a simple five-day course to pass and become a security officer; plus, they had to complete an extra course called Recognize Terrorist Threat (RTT). An extra course is supposed to be in the works to continue to be a security officer.
Too Many SSO And Higher Grade Of Security Officer In The Market
The SSO to SSS is more than 50% of the grade in the Singapore security market. However, clients are not asking for more higher-grade officers; instead, they are looking to find more security officer grades. And they are looking to cut "grade" if they can; if they cannot, then they cut the manpower or both.
On the other hand, Security Officers feel that if they get a certificate higher than Security Officer, then they must earn that salary, but this is not the case. There are limited openings for that position, so if you got it, good for you.
Of course, with the improved salary comes clients asking security agencies to reduce the workforce or grade of higher-grade officers in their contracts to adjust to the cost. So more pay = more work and fewer people.
More License Renewal
Security Officers starting in 2024 will need to renew their security license once every few years by taking an online test that they can retake as many times as they need to pass to renew their license. It's a small inconvenience, but it's alright.
The barrier to entry to the security industry is still low
Earning $2,650 a month isn't difficult if you don't mind the work, location, and time. To be a security officer, you don't have to be:
In a nutshell, security work uses the best exchange of time for money, even if education and physical are limited. The right attitude to your work will help you get through the day and advance your position.
If I Can Talk To You Like A Friend.
Your Grade Isn't Given
I know that you studied and worked for it, but your grade isn't your entitlement. The client's requirement is. They are working to please their client, too, by keeping their cost manageable.
Go ahead and take on the role of a security officer if the family and bank account require you to work, then take on a security assignment if the location is near enough and the salary is comfortable. If the colleagues are good and stable at the worksite, then that's a bonus.
Technology is the Big Next Step For The Security Industry
The ability to use gadgets and technology to help security operations work for better security outcomes. More security agencies are working with software companies to provide better security officers with tools to work with. With a phone or a tablet, the security agency can take attendance, incident reports, and many other things instead of having four books to write daily. All that is reduced to a phone or tablet if the security officer is willing to use it.
Get comfortable with technology to cut out the repetitive tasks in security work.
So get comfortable with technology, like getting attached to your smartphone to do your everyday things. Do the same thing for the security agency that has given you all these tools to cut out the task that should be cut because it is just repeating the same thing repeatedly. And be more productive with your time at the worksite so that you can learn and grow. The security industry is more advanced than it ever was, but the important thing is the people who drive the technology, and that will be you, just making things better for everyone.

PS: The Security Industry is recession-proof, proven by Covid19
Covid 19, at the beginning of the lockdown, is breaking businesses left and right. However, the enforcement side of the Covid 19 can provide job opportunities to all job seekers who lose their jobs to Covid 19.
While most businesses are forced to shut down during the Singapore lockdown, the security jobs continue because it's essential that everyone, including the government, understands it is even more critical during the COVID-19 period. If you see enforcement jobs like Safe Distance Ambassador, TraceTogether Team, and temperature takers, they are just security dressed in different clothes. So, the security jobs have proved to be recession-proof this time.
