Black Press Media is seeking a curious, driven and digitally savvy Legislative Reporter to join our award-winning news team. This role is an exciting opportunity for a journalist who thrives on holding power to account, breaking down complex policy, and delivering timely, accurate and engaging reporting to communities across the province.
As the B.C. Legislative Reporter, the successful applicant will lead coverage from the provincial capital, producing daily news, insightful features and enterprise journalism focused on issues that directly affect British Columbians. This reporting will serve readers in urban and rural communities alike, from Vancouver Island to the Kootenays, providing a lens into how provincial decisions impact everyday life.
This role is part of our broader provincial affairs team and offers regular collaboration with regional reporters across our B.C. network. The journalist who takes on this role will be expected to provide both breaking news and in-depth analysis from the legislature and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Report from the B.C. Legislature during sitting periods, including daily updates, scrums, news conferences and committee meetings when appropriate.
- Produce explanatory journalism that makes provincial politics and policy accessible to readers across the province.
- Develop sources within political parties, government ministries, watchdog organizations and advocacy groups.
- Create multimedia content including video clips, live tweets and short social-first explainers.
- File stories that are accurate, well-researched and meet tight deadlines.
- Work collaboratively with Editors and fellow Journalists across Black Press Media’s local newsrooms.
Qualifications- Degree or diploma in journalism or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 2 years of newsroom reporting experience, ideally including political or government coverage.
- Strong news judgment, research and interview skills.
- Proven ability to write clean, compelling copy that follows CP Style while under deadline pressure.
- Familiarity with B.C.’s political landscape, history and major policy issues.
- Experience with social media platforms (X/Twitter, BlueSky, Instagram, Threads) as a tool for news gathering and audience engagement.
- Knowledge of broader parliamentary processes and legislative reporting is an asset.
- Video and audio journalism skills are a bonus.
