Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager who will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of tax compliance, preparing quarterly tax provisions, planning and strategic tax planning, and ensuring adherence to federal and state/provincial tax regulations, across Canada and the U.S. This role requires strong knowledge of either the Canadian or U.S. tax regulations, with a high-level understanding of the other country’s regulations, including indirect taxes (GST/HST, PST, sales & use tax), and transfer pricing. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and able to navigate complex tax structures while ensuring compliance with evolving tax laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Tax Strategy & Planning
- Work with our external tax advisors to support the design and execution of the organization’s tax strategy to optimize tax efficiency and best position funds for optimal after-tax returns to investors.
- Support our external tax advisors in analyzing tax implications of business initiatives, acquisitions, and restructurings.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation, informing management as applicable and working with our external tax advisors to assess their impact on the business.
- Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee all tax requirements, including the implementation of corporate tax planning and tax requirements across business units.
- Set organizational tax compliance standards and manage compliance efforts to ensure timely and accurate preparation and filing of all income and transaction tax returns, extensions, and payments. For example, ensure processes established are adhering to Reg 105 Non-Resident Tax compliance.
- Oversee the preparation of the corporate tax returns for all jurisdictions, including federal, provincial, and state returns, and work with the external tax advisors on finalizing and submission. The candidate should have strong knowledge of Canadian or US tax, and a working knowledge of the other country’s tax regime.
- Oversee the preparation of other tax compliance, including country by country reporting and Global Minimum Tax, and work with the external tax advisors on finalizing and submissions.
- Oversee indirect tax compliance (GST/HST, PST, sales & use tax) and ensure proper tax treatment for transactions across jurisdictions.
- Lead tax audits and inquiries from government authorities, coordinating responses from internal and external stakeholders and ensuring compliance.
- Transfer Pricing & Intercompany Transactions
- Maintain and oversee the company’s Transfer Pricing Policy, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Develop an understanding and detailed knowledge of the tax structure and reporting packages to ensure conformity with accounting standards and tax provisions for each region.
- Understand and support with intercompany transactions, including supporting the associated journal entries required, loans, and agreements, for adherence to the Company’s transfer pricing policy, ensuring accurate documentation and tax treatment.
- Work with external advisors and internal stakeholders to ensure transfer pricing policies align with global tax regulations.
- Tax Accounting & Reporting
- Perform the initial tax provision calculations for financial reporting under IFRS and local country GAAP, as applicable.
- Ensure accurate and timely reconciliation of tax accounts, deferred tax assets/liabilities, and tax reserves.
- Work with the finance team on tax forecasting and budgeting.
- Act as main point of contact with external financial reporting auditors, ensuring that supporting documentation is provided for quarterly and annual financial reporting filings.
- Process Improvement & Risk Management
- Work with the Finance COE team to help identify opportunities for process improvements and automation in tax compliance and reporting.
- Support setting new processes to standardize tax reporting, returns, compliance, and payments to drive automation and create efficiencies.
- Develop internal controls and policies to mitigate tax risks and enhance efficiency, in conjunction with the Finance COE and Internal Audit.
- Act as a point of escalation to resolve taxation and reporting-related issues in a timely manner, ensuring all queries are addressed correctly and efficiently.
Qualifications
- Accounting designation (CPA, CA or equivalent) is required; Master’s in Tax or In-Depth Tax Course is an asset.
- Progressive experience in finance or accounting, with 4+ years of tax experience.
- Strong knowledge of either Canadian or U.S. corporate tax, indirect tax and transfer pricing regulations, with a solid understanding of the other jurisdiction.
- Experience managing tax audits and dealing with tax authorities.
- Proficiency in tax accounting under IFRS.
- Familiarity with intercompany financing, cross-border transactions and tax treaty applications.
- Effective stakeholder management, including developing good relationships with revenue, statutory and regulatory authorities.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Keeps up to date with proposed new tax legislation impacting the organization.
