Job Description
The Consultant Physician is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high quality evidence-based care; effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing and treating all patients placed under the post holder’s care. The Consultant Physician is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.
Responsibilities
Managerial & Administration
- Supports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.
- Helps lead and implement the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
- Participates in the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
- Assists with scheduling and supports the Division Chief in ensuring that adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times.
- Attends Divisional meetings as required.
- Assists the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate.
- Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.
Technical Duties
- Diagnoses and treats patients according to established standards of best practice for the post holder’s specialty. The Consultant Physician’s clinical duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Oversees the clinical activities of the junior medical staff and is responsible for the care they provide.
- Complies with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
- Practices appropriate utilization of the organization’s resources.
- Leads ward rounds; reassesses both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis, in line with established best practice.
- Accurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.
- Regularly reviews results of all investigations and modifies treatment as required.
- Liaises with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
- Actively participates in multidisciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients.
- Ensures preparation of patients for all procedures, including obtaining informed consent.
- Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk‑in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
- Participates in and ensures the provision of out‑of‑hours (on‑call) coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required.
- Communicates clinical information to patients and the patient’s family and friends (with patient consent) in a timely manner.
- Maintains a good working relationship with members of staff and promotes collaboration and a team‑based approach to patient care.
- Performs other clinical responsibilities as assigned.
Quality & Safety
- Helps lead quality improvement within the Department.
- Supports a culture of regular audit and encourages the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
- Supports the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.
Education
- Promoting and assisting in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff (required).
- Facilitating the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty.
- Showing commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME).
- Promotes and participates in clinical research and publication.
- Keeps abreast of current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.
Qualifications
- Tier 1: Not less than 2 years relevant experience as a consultant or equivalent post board certification.
- Tier 2: Not less than 8 years full‑time employment as a Consultant or equivalent post board certification (including years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute.
Experience
For UAE Nationals, clinical fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience as follows: each year of clinical fellowship is counted as two years of clinical experience.
Only applicable to clinical subspecialty fellowship in the following countries (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, U.K., U.S.A.) or HAAD accredited fellowship programs.
