Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is looking to appoint an outstanding individual to a Tenured Professorship in “English Linguistics” within the Faculty of Philosophy II, Institute of English and American Studies.
The position will commence preferably by April 1, 2026.
The successful candidate is expected to represent the range of English Linguistics in research and teaching. Teaching comprises the areas of the language system, English in use and its history. The candidate is expected to cover two of the following three research fields: varieties of English; text, media and conversation analysis; language history. In each of these areas, there must be a decisive emphasis on one or more aspects of the university’s research profile – e.g. transformation, knowledge culture and education. Solid experience with corpus linguistics and the digital humanities is also expected. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the research foci of the faculty and the English department.
The successful candidate will offer courses in all degree programmes of the English department. They are expected to develop cooperations in teaching and research across the faculty and be well-connected in international research communities. The candidate should have experience in third-party funding acquisition and be willing to do university committee work.
Further duties and responsibilities are stipulated in section 34 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities. Applicants need to fulfill the pre-conditions of appointment as stipulated in section 35 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities. Particular emphasis is placed on a habilitation in English linguistics, or an equivalent level of scientific achievement and recognition. Candidates are expected to have attained the appropriate level of experience or qualification in teaching. They are also expected to have a C 2-level command of English and a C 1-level command of German.
