You will be championing Engineering excellence in a key area for M&S, that enables our online customers to find, evaluate and buy products. As the Principal Engineer for Selling Experience, you will support multiple teams in providing an engaging, simplified, transparent and inspirational digital experience that delivers the best online purchasing experience in the UK and Irish market.

You will be responsible for:

1. Optimising the M&S online Web Experience across all device types, as well as SEO.
2. Leading teams in delivering best-in-class engineering solutions.
3. Identifying opportunities to improve team efficiency through technology and ways of working.
4. Championing an experimentation lead culture.
5. Leading maturity to Elite Dora for all products in the Browse & Select area.
6. Leading Engineering Excellence and creating a culture of innovation.
7. Maximising the value delivered by teams.

The Principal Software Engineer role is the embodiment of ‘solving problems through technology’ with key responsibilities as follows:

1. Lead technical excellence from design to operations and launch of core product features.
2. Drive technical direction and influence overall strategy.
3. Champion Communities of Practice to establish engineering excellence.
4. Lead by example via contributions to our engineering ecosystem.
5. Pioneer methodologies like clean code and clean architecture.
6. Advocate for engineering productivity and operational excellence.
7. Drive DevOps practices to automate the Product development life cycle.
8. Partner with Engineering, Technology and Product leadership to ensure strategies align.
9. Mentor other engineers across the entire landscape.
10. Promote effective innovation across all of engineering.
11. Inspire ideas to foster purpose and mastery to engineering teams.
12. Raise the profile of M&S Tech through public content and open-source contributions.
13. Support recruitment, onboarding and internal and external brand outreach activities.

Experience in implementing solutions using modern web-facing software that provides the best possible experience across multiple devices. Specialist in clean code and implementation of design patterns for common problems.

Depth of knowledge in Information Security, able to design and assure solutions with security controls embedded. Confident in driving system design conversations, building systems characterised by high levels of risk, impact, and complexity.

Strong understanding of quality assurance and testing methodologies. Ability to lead senior engineers and technical customers to desired outcomes without prescribing it. Authoritative skills in cloud computing and automation.

Experience with Observability and Reliability using market technologies. Good experience with Performance Engineering and expertise in reliability testing.
