The PHN’s practice in this position will focus primarily as a PHN in Child Health Clinic and influenza at or out of Strathcona Public Health Centre. The Public Health Nurse (PHN) is a key position working in partnership within a multidisciplinary team. The PHN partners with community stakeholders to provide integrated, strength-based, family-centered care in various settings. Nursing services include provision of universal Public Health services including antenatal care; routine postnatal care; health assessment, counseling, screening, immunization; follow up; and referral, linkage, advocacy, consultation, and teaching as they relate to preschool school-aged children, families, adults, and seniors. The PHN is required to pack, lift, move, and transport heavy and/or awkward supplies to various work sites. Service delivery may require walking several blocks and climbing several flights of stairs, awkward and repetitive movements, sitting, standing, and/or bending for long periods of time. This position requires travel within urban and rural communities during work hours. This position requires the successful candidate to follow appropriate hand hygiene techniques including the regular use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer and antibacterial soap.

In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making, as well as teach, counsel, and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion, and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family-centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Recent experience (within the past two years) in public health nursing or other recent nursing experience in maternal/postpartum and newborn assessment and care, NICU, Pediatrics, Labour and Delivery or Occupational Health and Safety with immunization experience. Ability to be self-directed and to exercise independent nursing judgment. Strong interpersonal skills. Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle. Experience in interdisciplinary teamwork. Strong written and oral communication skills. Strong analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and organizational skills. Working knowledge of computer applications including basic word processing, email, Internet access, and data entry.
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (BN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Community Health Nursing. Recent experience (within the past 2 years) immunizing babies, preschool, school-aged children &/or adults. Experience working with teens, diverse cultures, & marginalized populations & knowledge, understanding & demonstrated use of the social determinants of health and health promotion. Experience working with an EMR (ex. Meditech, connect care).
