The Advocate for Children and Youth is an independent office of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. It is non-partisan, objective, and independent of the government of the day. The Advocate acts on behalf of children and youth receiving services from any government, agency, or publicly funded health entity and engages in advocacy, investigations, public education, and research on matters that impact children and youth in the Province of Saskatchewan.

Reporting to the Director, Advocacy, this position works both independently and within a team environment to advocate on behalf of children and youth on matters brought to the office by individuals and groups or raised by the Advocate. This position takes a diplomatic and non-adversarial approach and requires advocating for the services to which young people are entitled, and to uphold their rights to services; ensuring that entities that serve children comply with policy standards; and assessing the appropriateness and comprehensiveness of services provided to children or youth. This position also requires experience in facilitating public presentations.

Based in Saskatoon, this position requires candidates to have a university degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. To qualify, you will possess the appropriate behavioral and technical skills, and competencies commensurate with the responsibilities of this position as demonstrated in your application.

You will bring:

1. Knowledge, experience, and understanding of child and youth-serving government structures, programs, policies, and legislation; and expertise in comprehension of legislation and its application to program delivery.
2. Sound understanding of issues affecting children and youth and experience working to resolve these issues.
3. General knowledge of advocacy processes, principles, the principles of natural justice, and commitment to the fair and respectful treatment of children.
4. Expertise in negotiation, mediation, and problem-solving.
5. Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse clientele and stakeholder groups including children, youth, and their families, as well as working with minority populations, particularly Indigenous Peoples.
6. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication, public speaking, and public relations skills.
7. Knowledge of community development, community outreach, and consultation processes.
8. Demonstrated experience in public/stakeholder presentations.
9. Investigative and/or research experience, system and policy analysis related to the provision of services to children.
10. Demonstrated commitment to upholding client service and quality principles in service delivery.
11. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize one's own workload while employing effective time management skills.
12. Experience inputting and processing information using various electronic information management systems.

The successful candidate will be required to travel and have flexibility in working hours.
