District Veterinary Hospital Navy Yard has an opportunity for a full-time experienced Veterinary Technician to join our team!

Compensation: $24 - $28 depending on experience and licensure.

Skills: We are looking for a candidate that is proficient with venipuncture, understands medical terminology, has an understanding of vaccination protocols, and wants to grow their skill set.

We are a gorgeous brand-new hospital with 2 sister hospitals located in the heart of the up-and-coming Navy Yard area of DC! We promise the staff and doctors at our hospital, along with our clients and all referral veterinary practices, will work as a cohesive unit by recognizing the equal contributions and value of every team member. We offer a wide variety of services at our hospital, including health certificates, aiding clients in dog licensure, general practice services such as soft tissue surgery, and laser therapy. We are also working towards adding acupuncture to our list of services.

We are not Fear Free certified, but we incorporate many of the techniques into our day-to-day interactions with our patients. Some members of our staff are certified.

We are looking for a candidate that is skilled in IV catheter placement, venipuncture, and anesthetic monitoring. Dental experience with dental x-ray is a bonus. We want someone with a growth mindset that has collaborative ideas and a strong focus on being part of a team. We are also looking for someone willing to share their knowledge with others on the team.

Responsibilities

Major Duties:

• Responsible for in-patient medical care - administer medications, assist or perform treatments, diagnostics & monitoring, place IV catheters, draw blood, run lab tests, administer IV fluids, cleaning, feeding, and walking patients as needed.
• Anesthesia/Surgery – Prep, induction, maintenance, monitoring, recovery of patients; clean/maintain/sterilize anesthesia equipment and surgical instruments.
• Dentistry - Provide patient dental care, ultrasonic cleaning and polishing, assist doctor with dental surgery.
• Radiology - Position patients and assist with radiographs, send radiographs via email.
• Laboratory duties - Collect, prepare, & run or submit samples for requested tests; read and record results when indicated (fecals, urines, ear cytology etc.) when requested by doctor.
• Preparing invoices, discharge instructions, and client informational tools.
• Client communication for hospitalized patients - give patient updates, discharge instructions, and provide follow-up for certain hospital patients.
• Client medical demonstrations/education - teach/educate clients on at-home care procedures.
• Veterinary Technician appointments - blood draws for therapeutic monitoring/screening tests, bandage changes, post-op checks, suture removals, AG, TNT.
• Clinic technician - assist doctor with outpatient appointments, prepare, restock, clean exam room, check patients in and out, take history and vitals, input data into patient medical record, ensure a smooth and timely flow of outpatient appointments from check-in to discharge.
• Assist with reception/front desk duties as needed - answering phones, booking appointments, admit/discharge patients.
• Assist in training and mentoring new team members.
• Assist with inventory control - inform inventory manager when products are getting low/out, unpack, restock drug & medical supplies.
• Preparing prescriptions - dispensed medications & medication refills.

Qualifications

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds and over 50 pounds with a coworker.
• Ability to endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods of time.
• Sufficient ambulatory skills to perform duties while in a hospital environment.
• Ability to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
• Routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and occasionally exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.
• Good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.
