Under the responsibility of the head of the Turbine team, the Lead Turbine Design Engineer participates in the design of hydraulic turbines in the different phases of a project from basic design to commissioning of the unit, including the basic and detail design examination and project follow up, support to manufacturing in GE Vernova shops and with our suppliers, commissioning and acceptance testing of the units on site for both existing as well as refurbishment of existing machines.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Be the technical person in charge of hydro turbine mechanical design on a new or refurbishment project, supported by Principal/Consulting Engineers.
2. Analyze technical information from Work Packages (Technical Specifications, Division of Work) and participate in identifying the risks and opportunities of the project on technical matters.
3. Plan and follow project engineering basic design phase and coordinate with Hydraulic design team (hydraulic test lab) and Special Calculation team.
4. Perform designs and calculations of turbine components and validate critical ones with Principal/Consulting Engineers.
5. Direct and manage design reviews, perform design review actions follow-up.
6. Provide technical support to the customer in coordination with the project System Integrator.
7. Prepare information for the execution of technical drawings and supervise and validate the draftsman work.
8. Optimize designs with Supply Chain, Site Installation to get the lowest installed equipment costs.
9. Write reports and engineering documents, including test procedures, engineering calculation notes, operation and maintenance manuals.
10. Occasionally conduct site visits to assess the existing turbine and participate to signature tests on the unit before disassembly at site.
11. Provide technical support to Supply Chain and to Site Installation team (erection and commissioning) of sub-assemblies / components under your responsibility.
12. Follow up the performance testing of the prototype turbine on site.
13. Develop tools and design guides for turbine engineering.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or Masters degree in a relevant discipline, including a minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience in mechanical design.
2. Experience with NX, AutoCad and/or SolidWorks.
3. Demonstrate technical leadership.
4. Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively.
5. Must be willing to comply with pre-employment screening, including but not limited, reference verification and background check.
6. Availability for occasional travel, in Brazil, Canada and USA.
7. Willingness to develop in-depth knowledge of hydro technical discipline using prior experience and acquired technical expertise to execute policy/strategy.
8. Strong oral and written communication skills in both Portuguese and English (French is a plus).
9. Interact fluidly with colleagues in our other facilities across and/or outside Brazil, and who are generally unable to communicate in Portuguese and whose language at work is predominantly English.
10. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
11. Ability to influence others and lead small teams.
12. Ability to coordinate several mandates simultaneously.
13. Effective problem identification and solution skills.
14. Proven analytical and organizational ability.
