About the Role

Reporting into the Head of Legal, the Specialist Legal Senior is responsible for providing legal support on a variety of complex judicial proceedings in the context of remediation projects, including social value and sustainability initiatives. Based in Brazil, the role will provide legal support to judicial proceedings in a challenging environment, with the ultimate goal to improve BHP’s position in litigation, maximize deliveries in remediation, and provide subject matter expertise to other teams within Legal and to other stakeholders across BHP. The role also includes support in negotiations with public entities, regulators, local communities, and others; developing and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

1. Support BHP legal team advising on complex litigation, including social value and sustainability initiatives.
2. Support and advise BHP, Samarco, and Renova Foundation in legal and administrative proceedings of various matters, complexities, and jurisdictions.
3. Proactively identify legal risks and opportunities and advise clients accordingly.
4. Operate independently with evidence of having used significant judgment to manage legal risk.
5. Provide support on day-to-day legal matters relating to BHP’s presence in Brazil.
6. Act as a backup for other Legal Team members.

About You

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience working in a top-tier law firm or international in-house team, with a focus on complex litigation and projects.

To be a top performer you will need:

1. Admitted to practice law.
2. Experience including law firms and/or working as an in-house lawyer for major national or multinational companies.
3. Business fluent in English and Portuguese.
4. Fluent in Spanish would be a plus (not mandatory).
