ENGINE ROOM SUPERVISOR
Reports To: Maintenance Superintendent

Background: The Engine Room Supervisor will exhibit good leadership, supervisory and safety behaviours and will specifically ensure that all aspects of Engine Room operation and maintenance are carried out safely, through careful delegation and control of responsibilities.

Authority: The Engine Room Supervisor is specifically responsible for the operation and maintenance of Engine Room equipment and systems and also the competence of those under his immediate supervision.

Immediate Subordinates: Assistant Maintenance Supervisor, all ER personnel, visitors, vendor technicians, and subcontractors.

Typical Responsibilities & Standards:

1. Engine Room Equipment and Systems and Utilities Operation and Maintenance:
   1. Prepare Engine Room Plant and Systems for start-up, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER.
   2. Start and Monitor Engine Room Plant and Systems, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER.
   3. Prepare and Shutdown Engine Room Plant and Systems, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER.
   4. Isolate and reinstate Engine Room Plant for Maintenance, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER.
2. Manage And Supervise Effectively:
   1. Establish effective relationships with colleagues and subordinates.
   2. Establish scope of work clearly (briefings, toolbox talks, presentations).
   3. Plan and control use of resources effectively (Personnel, time, materials, transport, IT).
   4. Use communication skills to show leadership (oral, teambuilding, recording, noting, handover, analysing).
   5. Be objective and consistent in assessment of subordinates using competence assessment system.
   6. Make recommendations and improvements in working practices for greater safety, efficiency and profitability.
   7. Ensure all Maintenance (Routine and breakdown) is completed and recorded accurately and clearly.
   8. Ensure all plant and machinery complies with Class and Inspections.
3. Contribute To Control Of Critical Situations And Respond To Emergencies:
   1. Develop critical situations (operational, weather, equipment failure, leaks, fires personnel etc) are identified and logged for later analysis.
   2. Take positive action to limit escalation and to maintain control using applied policies or procedures or initiative.
   3. Alert external agencies as appropriate in good time.
4. Monitor and Maintain Pollution Control Measures:
   1. Sample and check that controlled discharges from area of responsibility to the environment are within prescribed limits.
   2. Identify and halt unplanned discharges where possible, and report immediately according to policy, procedure and regulation.
   3. Deal with equipment, waste or other materials for disposal according to the correct procedure.
   4. Ensure resources such as PPE materials tools and spares are not wasted or used inefficiently.
5. Emergency Response:
   1. Show competence during drills and exercises.
   2. Carry Out Emergency Response Role.

Qualifications and Experience:

• STCW Reg.III/2 Chief Engineer Unlimited Certificate (Steam and Motor endorsement preferred), (DCE for Petroleum/Gas as appropriate).
• Experience as Chief Engineer on VLCC preferred and at least 2 yrs as 1st Engineer.
• Experience and knowledge of hydrocarbon processing and utility systems desirable.
• Computer literate in Management System ‘Office’ software packages and experienced on maintenance management systems. Experience in Permit to Work Systems.
• Medically fit to offshore International standards such as ENG1 or equivalent.

Additional:
