Grandview Medical Center is seeking an innovative, strategic, operational, and transformational physician executive to provide leadership in all aspects of medical staff affairs for the hospital with an emphasis on creating a high-reliability culture of quality, patient safety, evidence-based medicine, and value-based clinical care. The goal of the Chief Medical Officer role is to set the vision and agenda for improvement in clinical outcomes, as well as resource utilization, patient-centered care coordination, and patient experience so as to optimize the quality of care through rigorous outcomes measurement, data analytics, and performance improvement processes. The Chief Medical Officer will manage the creation, updating, and implementation of quality and safety standards and processes for the hospital to ensure consistency and continuity with the goal of reducing inappropriate variation. The Chief Medical Officer will be a member of the hospital’s executive team and report directly to the Chief Executive Officer.
Chief Medical Officer Responsibilities:
The Chief Medical Officer has a broad scope of responsibility including, but not limited to, the following essential functions:
Quality, Safety and Patient Experience Initiatives
- Serve as enterprise champion for the development and sustainability of a culture of quality, safety, and high reliability and provide leadership in the design and implementation of comprehensive quality and safety programs for the hospital.
- Serve as a change agent for programs that will create clinical improvement and optimization of related activities or goals for CHS and the Medical Center.
- Develop, evaluate and implement clinical practice protocols in collaboration with the hospital’s clinical staff and facilitate evidence-based practices which drive the development of a culture of patient safety.
- Provide leadership and vision in the development of clinical guidelines and care pathways and integrate, monitor, and evaluate quality assurance with disease management.
- Support efforts to improve quality outcomes, both clinically and administratively, to ensure the highest standards in the treatment and care of patients.
- Support compliance with all relevant state and federal licensing and accrediting bodies.
- Participate in the ongoing development of clinical information systems and electronic medical records to allow proper utilization of clinical data analytics and feedback to physicians regarding their practice patterns and performance.
Medical Staff Partnership
- Support medical staff officers, chiefs and committee chairs to provide leadership for the hospital’s bylaws, rules, and regulations, as well as policies, procedures, and behavior standards.
- Support the Medical Staff in its self-governance and accountability to the Hospital Board for quality and safety of patient care. Assure medical staff compliance with bylaws, rules and regulations, as well as policies, procedures, and behavior standards.
- Partner with medical staff leadership to resolve disputes between members of the medical staff and follow up on medical staff behavioral issues as outlined in relevant hospital and medical staff policies.
- Define the roles of the Medical Staff leaders as outlined in the bylaws and regulations. Ensure medical staff development plans and programs are implemented and maintained.
- Provide leadership in the areas of strategic planning, strategy execution and implementation of care management programs. Work closely with the regional, corporate and facility leadership to advise, organize and educate physicians on clinical integration.
- Support physician recruitment and promote programs which enhance physician satisfaction.
Registration/Certification/Licensure: Board certification in medical specialty.
Experience: Proven success as an acute care hospital CMO driving quality and patient throughput improvements. Minimum of five years experience as a general practitioner in private practice, medical staff, military or medical society affairs.
Education: Graduate of an accredited medical school with an M.D. or D.O. degree with current licensure by the State of Alabama as a physician and surgeon along with significant management training; preference given to candidates with MBS, MPH or MHSA credentials.
Required knowledge and professional experience:
- Demonstrated performance and accomplishments in physician leadership roles gained in an acute care hospital setting and/or major medical group.
- 8+ years of clinical practice experience.
- Experience in and significant understanding of contemporary clinical process improvement, acute care hospital clinical quality benchmarking, best practices and quality management programs.
- Familiarity with and understanding of medical staff organization, credentialing, bylaws, rules, and regulations.
- Possesses high energy and enthusiasm.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
- Demonstrated abilities with strategic planning, budgeting, management, and goal setting.
- Experience designing effective clinical practice patterns and clinical protocols to decrease inappropriate utilization to enhance quality outcomes.
- Works as a goal-setting and solutions-oriented leader.
