The Role

We are looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Head of Finance to lead all aspects of our financial operations.

You will ensure accurate financial reporting and support the CEO and Board with strategic planning. You will also oversee IT strategy, ensuring effective systems and processes are in place.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead, manage and improve the Trust's finance function and provide accurate, timely and relevant financial reports as required by the CEO, Executive Team and the Trust Board.
  2. Partner with the CEO, Executive Leadership Team and Board of Trustees to develop, evaluate and implement strategies that expand the Trust.
  3. Be the Executive Lead of the Finance Audit and Risk Committee, developing and ensuring timely cycle of papers with and to the CEO and to the Committee and Board as required and liaising with the Head of Governance and HR as required.
  4. Ensure the provision and reporting of financial accounts, forecasting and the financial elements of large-scale project/programme budgets, estate development plans, and the associated reporting. Determine with the CEO where external expertise may be required.
  5. Design and implement robust financial frameworks that uphold the Trust's mission and comply with all statutory processes in line with the Charity Commission and Companies House requirements, including the Annual Audit. Allocate tasks for timely responses and keep all colleagues abreast of progress.
  6. Monitor cash flow, reserves, and analysis of performance against the organisation's annual business plan and dashboard as it relates to the finance function. Deliver data-driven insights and reports to support strategic decision-making at all levels.
  7. Contribute to the overall leadership of the Trust and to the Trust's future strategic and operational planning. Support Executive Team colleagues as required on the delivery of cross-team initiatives.
  8. With the CEO, play an important role in the Trust's 'Wholly Owned Subsidiary' currently being established, ensuring the smooth running of the Subsidiary's finance operation.
  9. Any other duties as may reasonably be required.

The Person
  • Significant and successful experience in senior operational leadership, at least as a Head of Finance, in a charity setting, and of working as part of a Leadership Team delivering initiatives outside the finance discipline.
  • Experience of leading and developing high-performance teams.
  • A formally recognised senior professional accounting qualification.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to give compelling presentations to a range of audiences.
  • A track record of working collaboratively with a team to develop successful internal partnerships and achieve joint success against shared objectives.
  • Considerable experience and understanding of all finance-related processes, with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience of implementing enhanced reporting tools within financial software, including the ability to coach others.
  • Practical knowledge of VAT, including accounting of partial exemption relevant to charities.
  • Practical knowledge of Corporation Tax and dealing with HMRC.
  • Experience of cost-effective procurement in line with policy.
  • The ability to plan and prioritise workloads and work accurately to deadlines, staying calm and focused under pressure.
