Job description

Building Services Technical Lead

Location - Central London

Salary - £62,496.60 (Inclusive of 12.5% shift allowance and contractual overtime)

Flexible Working: 4 days on, 4 days off (12-hour day shifts). Due to the nature of the role, flexible or remote working isn’t possible. Please be reassured that we’ll work with you to ensure you have a good work-life balance, taking into account any responsibilities outside of work as far as possible.

About Us

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. A role in MI5 means you’ll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

The Role

As we work hard to keep our country safe, it’s equally important that we protect our people, places, and property. When you join us, you’ll help us do just that – from one, or several locations in the London area. Our Estate team manage a portfolio of properties, delivering high-quality building services, facilities management, support services, projects and workplace change across a wide variety of building types. In short: it’s all about keeping us operational so we can maintain our critical front-line business function.

The Estate team set the standard for what good looks like, translating business requirements into actionable outcomes, ensuring the smooth running of services and seeking the best, most cost-effective solutions. As the Building Services Technical Lead, you’ll work closely with our engineering suppliers, partners and building occupants. You will effectively oversee the monitoring and control of the operation of plant and systems within our buildings, ensuring minimal disruption and downtime. This includes electrical distribution, mechanical systems, security equipment, building management systems and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems.

Actively driving quality and improvement while implementing and managing change, you’ll always seek the best resolution to deliver an excellent customer experience. You’ll continually identify areas of improvement and take ownership of problems, making regulatory and health and safety compliance your top priority. All the while, you’ll use your communication and planning skills to help deliver our business aligned estates strategy. Parking is available on-site.

About You

To apply, you need a minimum HNC qualification or equivalent (City & Guilds or NVQ Level 4) in a related field such as mechanical or electrical engineering. You’ll be able to demonstrate your technical skills in either the mechanical or electrical field within a large commercial/office building.

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of plant criticality maintenance regimes and life cycle planning as well as a sound knowledge of Safe Systems of Work and mechanical/technical permits. In addition, you’ll have experience of monitoring a large facilities management operation through supplier partners.

As someone with recent experience working in management operations, you’ll be confident undertaking work audits and providing reports that result in improved operational delivery. At the same time, you’ll be keen to consistently develop your own skills and knowledge. Most importantly, you’ll be passionate about delivering excellent operational customer service and able to build and maintain positive professional relationships with our stakeholders, partners and suppliers.

Training and Development

When you start, you’ll get a three-day induction to help you understand our ways of working and be assigned a buddy to help you settle in. We’ll work with you to build the skills you need to successfully carry out your responsibilities, providing access to learning and development opportunities tailored to your role. We’ll also invest in your learning and support you to gain professional qualifications and certifications.

We’re committed to developing our staff and recognise this will look different for everyone. We have an exceptional skills community dedicated to supporting you and from day one, you’ll be encouraged to spend a minimum of 10% of your time on training and development. And, as you build your future with us, you’ll be empowered to set your own direction for your career and to explore progression opportunities within the Estates department as well as the wider organisation.

Rewards and Benefits

You’ll receive a starting salary of £62,496.60 (Inclusive of 12.5% shift allowance and contractual overtime). Other benefits include:

  • 25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
  • Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
  • Interest-free season ticket loan (travel and parking)
  • Personal Learning budget
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars (at some locations)
  • Paid parental and adoption leave.

At MI5 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Find out more about our culture, working environment and diversity on our website: https://www.MI5.gov.uk/careers/diversity

There is a wide range of extra support available throughout the recruitment process to enable you to do your best, see our website for information on the reasonable adjustments we can offer.

We’re Disability Confident

MI5 are proud to have achieved Leader status within the DWP’s Disability Confident scheme. This is aimed at encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people. Being Disability Confident, we aim to offer a person-to-person interview to any candidate who self-identifies as disabled and meets the essential criteria for the role. This is our ‘Offer of Interview’ (OOI). To secure an interview to the assessment centre for this vacancy, the essential criteria (in order of application process) are:

  • Pass the motivational question in your application - assessed at application sift.
  • A minimum Higher National Certificate (HNC) or equivalent level 4 qualification and/or demonstrable experience working in management, operations, and leadership answered at application stage - assessed at application sift.

What to Expect

Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. Here is a brief overview of each stage, in order:

  • Application sift, looking at your motivation for the role and the organisation
  • Assessment centre consisting of a competency-based interview and Technical Assessment
  • If successful you will receive a conditional offer of employment

Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process to progress to the next. Your application may take around 6 - 9 months to process including vetting, so we advise you continue any current employment until you have received your final job offer.

Before You Apply

To work at MI5, you need to be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality. You can read our full eligibility criteria here.

This role requires the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). It’s something everyone in the UK Intelligence Community undertakes. You can find out more about the vetting process here.

Please note we have a strict drugs policy, so once you start your application, you can’t take any recreational drugs and you’ll need to declare your previous drug usage at the relevant stage.

Before you apply, we advise you to consider setting up a separate email address for your contact with us, to ensure your personal and application correspondence remain separate. Try to avoid having identifying features in your email address, such as your first and/or surname and date of birth. This is good practice and will help you to manage your application with us more securely.

This role is based in central London, so you’ll need to live within a commutable distance. Please consider any financial implications and practicalities before submitting an application. An interest-free loan via our benevolent fund is available to assist with relocating into privately rented accommodation to take up the offer of employment.

Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to launch an application. Applying from outside the UK will impact on our ability to progress your application. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member.

Right to Withdraw Statement

Please be aware that we withhold the right to bring forward the closing date for this role from the original closing date once a certain number of applications have been received. Please be mindful of this and submit your application at your earliest convenience to avoid disappointment.
