Job description

The Royal Horseguards is a stunning 5 star hotel overlooking the River Thames, close to The Embankment and Trafalgar Square. The hotel has 282 bedrooms, restaurant, bar and terrace area as well as exceptional banqueting facilities at one of London's most prestigious conference and banqueting venues, One Whitehall Place.

The Role

In this role, a little kitchen experience would be an advantage but we will provide training. Day to day duties will include basic food preparation - chopping vegetables, preparing the ingredients for the chefs to use, date labelling food stuffs and checking they are stored correctly. You may be involved in preparing staff meals, assisting in volume cooking for banqueting events and plating dishes ready to be served! Looking to grow? We have apprenticeship training courses available - which will help you develop your skills and knowledge.

What we look for
  • Assist the kitchen’s senior staff
  • Help ensure that operations run smoothly
  • Handle the preparation of meal ingredients, including washing, peeling, cutting, and seasoning food items
  • Oversee the reception of deliveries, organize stock, and be responsible for stock rotation to ensure fresh ingredients are always available
  • Keep workstations and the kitchen area clean, adhering to health and safety regulations
  • Although not always required, having a culinary degree or relevant certification can be advantageous
  • The ability to organize and multitask effectively is crucial, given the fast-paced nature of kitchen operations
  • As the role often involves long hours and can be physically demanding, it’s essential for the candidate to be hardworking and passionate about their work
  • A Commis Chef must operate efficiently as part of a team, cooperating with various kitchen staff
  • Good communication skills are essential to effectively understand instructions and collaborate with the team
