Genomics England partners with the NHS to provide whole genome sequencing diagnostics. We also equip researchers to find the causes of disease and develop new treatments - with patients and participants at the heart of it all.

Job Description

We are seeking a Financial Controller to lead the operational finance team within Genomics England's Finance Function. In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring strong financial management, regulatory compliance, and smooth financial operations.

You will take the lead on financial reporting, oversee audits, and provide senior leadership with valuable financial insights to support strategic decision-making.

Everyday responsibilities include:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a collaborative and high-performing finance operations team, guiding day-to-day operations and long-term career development.
  • Maintain a strong internal control environment to ensure financial accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations in financial operations and shared services payroll.
  • Ensure year-end reporting information is provided to external auditors and advisors and that regulatory requirements of all statutory bodies are met.
  • Prepare quarterly reports for the main shareholder and annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with UK GAAP and FRS 102.
  • Maintain a reporting model for conversion between FRS 102 and IFRS.
  • Ensure VAT, corporate tax, and other statutory filings are accurate and submitted according to timetables.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline financial processes and improve operational efficiency.
  • Support senior leadership in decision-making by providing actionable financial data and key performance metrics.
  • Ensure the integrity of financial systems, making recommendations for improvements in ERP systems and reporting tools, working in collaboration with the finance team's System Accountant.
Skills and experience for success:
  • Proven experience in a similar leadership role, hands-on, and collaborative approach.
  • Strong knowledge of UK GAAP, FRS 102, and IFRS.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Blended working model

Genomics England operates a blended working model as we know our people appreciate the flexibility that hybrid working can bring. We expect most people to come into the office a minimum of 2 times each month. However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. There is no expectation that people will return to the office full time unless they want to, however, some of our roles require full time on site attendance e.g., lab teams, reception team.

Our teams and squads have, and will continue to reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum. Our office locations are: Canary Wharf, Cambridge and Leeds.
