POSITION SUMMARY
Purpose
To lead a Process Group within Air Products’ Regional Engineering organization for Air Products’ captive (Sale of Gas) and third party (Sale of Equipment) businesses. To ensure competitiveness, successful asset creation, productive internal and external interfaces, risk management, and talent management. Asset creation work involves developing, bidding, and executing projects.
The organizations portfolio is broad, both in terms of industrial gas technologies (cryogenics, high temperature, adsorption, catalytic, absorption) and scale (highly standardized/small-scale products with individual asset values of USD 500,000-3,000,000, through complex facilities with asset values on the order of USD 500,000,000).
Nature and Scope
Air Products is a gas company investing in and engineering for industrial gas business, including traditional Air Separation, HYCO, Coal Gasification plants, and sustainable Blue and Green Hydrogen business. The job holder is process manager in SEA and reports directly to the Asia process engineering manager.
The nature of the position is managing the process design team of southeast Asia Engineering organization. The team comprises of process engineering, process system engineering. The core business of the team is conducting process design for ASU, HYCO and green/blue H2 projects. The position holder is functionally responsible for all the process and process system engineering activities in southeast Asia engineering organization.
This role requires understanding and translating business requirements into effective engineering & design strategies and delivering on all facets of bid and project commitments. The functional responsibilities include resource development, planning and management, managing short-term and long-term capabilities and capacities development and maintenance of quality, timeliness, and performance of deliverables. This role requires to collaborate with Asia process team to share resources, experiences, work practices and lessons learned, build and comply with globally consistent work processes.
The position holder needs to have detail process design skills and technical competence to be able to evaluate, develop and assign works to individuals, and very often act as a lead engineer for projects and document checker/approver. So the position is a managerial role, and a lead engineer role as well.
Multi-faceted planning, decision-making, and communication accountabilities span the above factors. To fulfill the requirements of the position the incumbent must develop collaborative working relationships with GEM team members (within region and global), Operations, Procurement, Product Line (PDP) and Technology.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
As Lead Engineer
Screen proper process cycle and run aspen for any bidding opportunities and projects assigned, communicate the results with Asia process engineering manager. Markup process flow diagram for any bid opportunities and projects assigned, organize PFD review meeting. Do process calculation and specifications for major equipment, evaluate the performance and cost difference of various solutions or offerings from various vendors. Provide other process deliverables as required. If delegated to do so ensure all process work is checked, and corrected as necessary, ready for approval. Provide on-job training and mentoring for less experienced engineers on a wide range of process design topics. Organize work so that he/she can meet deadlines dictated by project schedules and the Process Manager yet have some flexibility to respond to unforeseen situations. Brief his/her supervisor or the lead process engineers he/she is working for at any time on the status of equipment on the projects for which he/she is responsible. Preparation of Process Design ‘Technology Risk Statements’ and gaining approval from Asia Process Manager and relevant Technology Manager. If delegated to do so lead the process engineering input during the project HAZOP for small projects, ensuring all actions are followed and documented. Liaise with other engineering disciplines to agree operational and interface details. Take the initiative in resolving interface problems. Identify areas where work processes could be developed or improved, and assist in implementing changes. Lead plant process design input during commissioning, start up and performance testing of projects at site. Do plant trouble shooting and provide design feedback to technology manager. This may necessitate periods of work away from the home office. Control the man-hours incurred on projects that are his/her responsibility, anticipate manpower requirements and highlight scope and design variations in accordance with Air Products procedures. Make proposals for the preparation or modification of standards, specifications, work practices, training materials etc. to reduce project costs and improve execution. Any other duties as assigned.
As Manager
Develop and deliver competitive design & engineering execution strategies to ensure the growth of Air Products businesses whilst consistently delivering on project commitments in terms of man-hours, cost, schedule, quality and performance.
Develop the capabilities and know-how to be able to deliver cost effective engineering & design strategies that support the broad portfolio of projects executed by the region and assigned work packages for projects in other regions.
Develop and implement effective strategies for managing workload fluctuations so that critical skills and capabilities are maintained during downswings and schedule, quality and performance are maintained during upswings.
Support the development, deployment and maintenance of tools and systems to ensure functional excellence and global commonality and consistency.
Support the creation and maintenance of key work processes and engineering standards to ensure that competitive and safe design of Air Products’ projects on a global basis.
Develop and maintain competency matrix of the regional team to ensure that we can support the business needs across the broad portfolio of offerings.
Develop and maintain global work process as needed. Audit work process compliance. Develop, maintain and audit the use of lessons learned database.
Provide strong leadership to the team and the Global Engineering & Manufacturing organization to ensure that Air Products reputation as a world-class engineering Company is enhanced in the market place.
Develop and maintain knowledge of regional statutory rules and regulations such that cost effective, legally compliant designs can be produced.
Participate where appropriate in governmental or industry groups which formulate policies, rules or regulations which are associated with engineering and design of Air Products’ facilities such that Air Products’ “voice” is heard and considered.
Make sure all technology risks have been identified, assessed and consequence managed, if there is any.
Make sure all designed plants meet guaranteed performance (production, purity and power). Seek global support for plant trouble shooting if needed. Interactive with R&D for technology development and technology test.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Must be conscientious, self-motivating, open minded, willing to take accountability. Must be familiar with the Global engineering organization and product line organization, the function of each discipline, how they interact and the function of the various support groups. Should have a good knowledge of company engineering procedures, standards and specifications, including knowledge of Air Products EH&S system. Should be willing to take lead under ambiguous situation. Have good communication skills. Must have proven experience in ASU, HYCO or Green/Blue H2 related process engineering, process system engineering or process safety. Must be able to lead process technology learning activities in the team. Capable of coaching. Should have appreciation of the development of man-hours estimates and equipment costs. Must have commercial and fiscal awareness. Should have good mastering of chemical engineering fundamentals as thermodynamics, flow of fluid, physical chemistry, etc. Should have good mastering of all relevant process design methods for process equipment and schedule items. This includes vessels, exchangers, rotating equipment, and their plumbing requirements. Should have good knowledge of control valve sizing and developing relief case scenarios and relief valve sizing, etc. Must be creative and willing to challenge the way as is, in order to simplify work and / or be cost effective.
