Context
There are currently more than 100 million men, women and children around the world who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, violence or persecution. In Latin America and the Caribbean, HIAS began operations in Honduras in 2022 and Guatemala in 2023, expanding its presence in the region to cover almost the entire migration route through offices in Aruba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.
Given the irregularity of increasing migration flows, the forcibly displaced population and their host community in Latin America and the Caribbean face significant risks, such as violence and abuse, human rights violations, and limited coverage of basic needs and access to services. In addition, the lack of legal documents prevents them from accessing formal employment and self-employment, making them particularly vulnerable to labor exploitation and informal work. Therefore, it is essential to foster capacity building to generate sustainable livelihoods for the population of interest, which in turn contribute to their protection.
