About us

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. There are very few organisations in the world that have such wide-ranging capabilities working with mental illness. Our scope is unique because it is built on three major foundations: care and treatment, science and research, and training.

SLaM employ around 5000 staff and serve a local population of 1.1 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards, outpatient and community services. Currently, provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; as well as substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.

Job responsibilities

The Race Equity Governance Project Manager role is critical to the Trusts ongoing commitment to race equity. The Post Holder will support the mainstreaming of PCREF principles by ensuring robust governance, timely reporting, and effective coordination of the Trusts race equity structures. This includes supporting the Race Equity Assurance Group and Joint Working Groups [JWGs] and enabling compliance with national expectations through high-quality administrative and stakeholder support.

The Trusts Partnership Governance arrangements developed during the Pilot phase were particularly commended and a write up of them was published as an exemplar during the launch of the PCREF in 2023. At the heart of the Governance is what we termed Triple Leadership. This means the perspectives of all three constituencies must always be heard, balanced and equally influential. The constituencies are (i) Current Service Users and their Carers; (ii) Community members of the Independent Advisory Groups; (iii) Staff including senior management as well as the staff groups affected by the changes proposed. This Triple Leadership model is reflected in the make-up of all the Groups and their Leadership arrangements. A further requirement of the Governance model is that all proposals from the JWGs must demonstrably have the involvement in a bi-directional way within each constituencys wider membership.

The postholder will play a pivotal role in supporting the coordination and governance of the Trusts Race Equity programme. This includes facilitating the Joint Working Groups and Race Equity Assurance Group and supporting the development and monitoring of co-produced Borough-Level Race Equity Action Plans. The postholder will ensure effective scheduling, stakeholder liaison, and documentation management to uphold high standards of governance and inclusivity.
