Job description

12 Month Fixed Term Contract/Secondment Opportunity.

It is an exciting time to be working in Hackney’s Streetscene team. The team is proud to be embarking on an innovative and ambitious multi-million-pound three-year local implementation plan (LIP) to take the borough closer to its Climate Action Plan transport goals for 2030.

We are now seeking a Senior Transport Planner to take a lead role in programme managing the Liveable Neighbourhood programme element of the LIP across its first year.

The successful candidate will be responsible for working alongside engineers, transport planners and senior stakeholders and on occasion with elected members. You will be responsible for ensuring a consistent approach across this diverse programme which will have varying and competing timelines. The role will involve collating and assessing a wide range of opportunities for change and ensuring that evidence is clearly set out and analysed to inform decisions. We are seeking candidates with the skill set to enable a collaborative working environment that delivers the wider outcomes for the Council and external funders.

The liveable neighbourhood work programme will involve coordinating and/or consideration of a diverse range of projects including traffic management interventions, healthy street improvements, gateways across main roads, cycle network development, exemption policy development, continual assessments of equality impacts, freight and logistic innovations and a range of kerbside measures that support sustainable travel.

As well as overall programme management, the successful candidate will be responsible for the continual assessments of equality impacts of Hackney’s existing and potential liveable neighbourhoods including Hackney’s exemption policy development, and also for driving forward Hackney’s existing work on freight and logistic innovations.

The successful candidate will, naturally, have good and effective communication and interpersonal skills. Strategic thinking and decision making will be important elements of this role as well as providing leadership on projects you are responsible for and career guidance and line management to at least one transport planner.

You should be able to write reports and consultation documents in a clear and concise style ready for use; be comfortable engaging with elected officials, even occasionally outside of normal hours; and able to liaise across disciplines and at all levels.

With multi-million-pound projects at early stages, the successful candidate will need to be well organised, with good relevant experience of project management; and well able to assimilate and help improve schedules, budgets, and technical drawings.

This role is offered as a maternity cover position for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on the Council's needs and the successful candidate’s performance. We are committed to supporting our team members and offer a supportive environment for all employees.

Closing date for applications: 13 April 2025 (22:59 pm).

Interview dates: W/c 22 April 2025.
