Package: £37,860 - £65,000 per annum (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

A relocation package may be available (terms and conditions apply).

Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. We will consider flexible working requests so that your work may fit in with your lifestyle. Just let us know your preferred working pattern on your application.

Let us introduce the role

AWE is currently recruiting for a Senior Safety Management Specialist for the Surety Engineering Group to help develop, implement, sustain and optimise the Safety and Environmental Management Systems (SEMS) across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE).

Key accountabilities and responsibilities:

  1. Develop an integrated approach to safety and environmental management across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise.
  2. Implement the requirements within Defence Standard 00-56 (and Defence Acquisition Safety Management Systems (ASEMS)).
  3. Enhance and optimise formal risk management processes to identify hazards and assess and mitigate risk.
  4. Proactively engage with stakeholders to ensure the necessary organisational structures, accountabilities, policies and procedures are implemented.
  5. Develop and implement processes for safety and environmental performance monitoring and continuous improvement.
  6. Identify and implement the training, education and promotion required within the DNE SEMS.
  7. Support the development of an organisational culture that reflects the developed safety policy and objectives.
  8. Support external activities as required as part of the Outreach and Engineering Programme, i.e. through presentations to external conferences/symposia.

We are seeking people with diverse skillsets, at various stages of their careers, including career returners, to join our dynamic team. We are proud to have such a friendly and supportive group for you to join which offers excellent development opportunities for our staff to progress. Within the team there are a number of learning and training opportunities, including up to Master's level following the recent launch of the Defence Nuclear Safety Engineering MSc.

Who are we looking for?

We do need you to have the following:

  1. Honours Degree (or equivalent) in science, engineering or related discipline, or equivalent level of experience.
  2. Experience working within a regulated industry with a thriving Safety and Environmental Management System (SEMS).
  3. Knowledge or experience of Defence Standard 00-56 (and Defence Acquisition Safety Management Systems (ASEMS)).

Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we'd like you to have experience in some of the following:

  1. Experience in writing reports and delivering presentations.
  2. Possess the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment, and be able to manage your own workload.

Some reasons we think you'll love it here:

AWE has a wide range of benefits to suit you. These include:

  1. 9-day working fortnight - meaning you get every other Friday off work, in addition to 270 hours of annual leave.
  2. Market leading contributory pension scheme (we will pay between 9% and 13% of your pensionable pay depending on your contributions).
  3. Family friendly policies: Maternity Leave - 39 Weeks Full Pay and Paternity Leave - 4 Weeks Full Pay.
  4. Opportunities for Professional Career Development including funding for annual membership of a relevant professional body (inc. chartered application).
  5. Employee Assistance Programme and Occupational Health Services.
  6. Life Assurance (4 x annual salary).
  7. Discounts - access to savings on a wide range of everyday spending.
  8. Special Leave Policy including paid time off for volunteering, public service (including reserve forces) and caring.
