SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant – Blaenau Gwent

Job Description:

Teaching Personnel is seeking an empathetic and dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive school in Blaenau Gwent. This rewarding role involves providing crucial support to students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. Your primary responsibility will be to offer tailored assistance both inside and outside the classroom, helping students manage their emotional well-being, behaviour, and academic progress.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you’ll play a key role in supporting students to overcome challenges and reach their full potential. You’ll work closely with students, offering guidance, encouragement, and mentorship, helping them build resilience and confidence in their learning and daily lives.

Hours: 08:30 - 15:30 Monday - Friday

Salary: £89.38 - £95 a day (dependant on experience)

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Build strong, trusting relationships with students and staff, fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere.
  2. Support students academically and emotionally, adapting your approach to meet their individual needs.
  3. Motivate and encourage students, helping them engage with lessons and develop important life skills.
  4. Provide consistent mentoring, offering guidance and advice to help students navigate emotional and behavioural challenges.
  5. Use de-escalation techniques and calming strategies to manage challenging behaviour in a constructive, safe manner.
  6. Ensure the safety and well-being of students, creating a stable environment that promotes learning.
  7. Help students manage their emotions and develop the skills necessary to work towards greater independence.
  8. Collaborate with school staff, parents, and external professionals to ensure comprehensive support for each student.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  1. Have experience working with children or adults with additional needs, particularly those with SEMH or behavioural difficulties.
  2. Possess strong communication skills and the ability to build meaningful relationships with students and staff.
  3. Have a positive, proactive attitude towards supporting student development and education.
  4. Be patient, adaptable, and resilient in managing challenging behaviours.
  5. Be open to using mentoring, motivational, and counselling approaches to support students’ emotional well-being.
  6. Candidates from care, sports, psychology, criminology, sociology, and youth work backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
