Qualifications

  • Experience in a ward or intensive care setting is essential.
  • Completion of NVQ Level 2, NVQ Level 3, and Care Certificate required.

Healthcare Assistant (Intensive Care Unit)

Cromwell Hospital, London SW5 0TU

Full time- 37.5 hours per week

Paying £29,029 - £31,529 per annum dependent on experience

Role Overview:

Our ICU treats a wide range of patients with different needs. Work ranges from caring for complex elective surgical patients to treating international patients that require a high level of medical and nursing support. Various specialisms involve Cardiothoracic surgery, Lung surgery, Renal Transplant, Liver Robotics, Orthopaedics, Neuro and Maxillofacial.

The unit aims to deliver safe, high-quality care whilst providing a supported environment to the nursing team. Apart from the specialists and educational nurses around the hospital, the unit also prides itself on offering a robust Multidisciplinary team which includes Doctors, Pharmacists, Dieticians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Infection Control & Tissue Viability.

What you'll do:

  • Assist in delivering a high standard of holistic care to patients, recognising their individuality, and promoting privacy and dignity.
  • Assist with patient hygiene, elimination, mobility, physical comfort, eating, drinking, whilst observing and reporting specific changes.
  • Observe and report changes in patient’s condition to named nurse/nurse in charge.
  • Assist the nursing staff with moving and repositioning of patients within the manual handling policies as required.
  • Ensure the needs and concerns of patients and their friends/relatives are given thorough attention, and a friendly and efficient service is provided.
  • Assist nursing staff with ward preparation for admission and to ensure the bay areas are appropriately cleaned on patient discharge or transfer.
  • Transport clinical specimens/prescription charts, as directed, to the relevant Departments.
  • Provide direct basic technical assistance to medical staff as and when required.
  • Assist in orientating patients and visitors to the ward environment.
  • Answer the telephone and relay messages to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Promote a safe environment by following safety work instructions and disseminating safety procedures and initiatives.
  • Keep the general environment clean and tidy, being alert to possible sources of cross-infection, maintaining safe and clear walkways and bed areas, ensuring fire exits remain clear and equipment and supplies are stored correctly.
  • Assist with restocking ward supply levels and report when stock levels are low.

What you’ll bring:

  • Experience in a ward or intensive care setting.
  • NVQ Level 2, NVQ Level 3, and completion of the Care Certificate.
  • First Aid Course.
  • Awareness of clinical audit.
  • Competent with venepuncture skills/phlebotomy skills.
  • You will need to have a caring, confident, assertive, compassionate personality and be sensitive in all situations, as well as being a good communicator.
