Job description

MEER is an international research and development organization focused on climate adaptation and mitigation solutions. Our projects aim to provide sustainable, low-cost heat adaptation infrastructure for vulnerable communities worldwide.

Website: MEER.org

About the Role:

We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer with expertise in CAD design and structural analysis to join our team. This senior role involves leading the development of innovative, climate-resilient buildings and mentoring a Junior Structural Engineer. The selected candidate will also manage premises and take on additional leadership responsibilities. Candidates should be passionate about climate adaptation and experienced in working with sustainable materials like bamboo and PET plastic to create cost-effective, high-efficiency structures.

Progress in Freetown:

Our work is already underway in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where we have an established office and a team of engineers. To date, we’ve piloted sustainable building designs, including homes and cool shading structures, using bamboo and recycled materials, improving thermal comfort for hundreds of residents. This role builds on that foundation, offering the chance to expand a proven initiative with a skilled local and international team.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop structural designs and CAD drawings for climate-resilient buildings, such as homes, schools, and cooling centers, using sustainable materials like bamboo and PET plastic.
  • Oversee the project lifecycle from concept to construction, ensuring sustainable practices are integrated.
  • Lead the design process to create buildings suited to the needs of vulnerable communities in extreme heat environments.
  • Manage and mentor a team, including a Junior Structural Engineer, fostering collaboration and innovation.
  • Collaborate with global engineers, architects, and community stakeholders to tailor designs to local conditions and resources.
  • Research and develop new materials and methods to enhance sustainability, thermal efficiency and fire safety in buildings.
  • Provide leadership in structural integrity assessments and improvements for existing and new projects.
  • Contribute to grant proposals and research publications on climate adaptation engineering.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
  • PhD or Master’s in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, or similar) for detailed structural design and visualization.
  • Strong knowledge of material science, load-bearing structures, and thermal efficiency in building design.
  • Passion for low-cost, climate-resilient building projects, especially in Global South contexts.
  • Willingness to work on-site in Sierra Leone for up to 8 weeks per year, with the remainder based in London (remote options available).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity for diverse communities.
  • Experience with parametric design and computational engineering tools (preferred but not essential).
Benefits & Compensation:
  • Salary Range: £45,000 - £60,000 per year, dependent on experience.
  • Opportunity to lead cutting-edge climate adaptation building projects in underserved regions.
  • Collaborate with an internationally recognized team, including Dr. Ye Tao, formerly of the Rowland Institute at Harvard University, a world-class scientist driving MEER’s vision.
  • Project-based funding for research and development.
  • Potential for long-term career growth within MEER.
International Experience and Travel Benefits:
  • Paid travel to Sierra Leone for hands-on experience in climate adaptation and mitigation.
  • Exposure to diverse cultures and challenging environments, enhancing personal and professional growth.
  • Direct impact on vulnerable communities through sustainable building projects.
  • Application of engineering skills in varied settings, expanding problem-solving capabilities.
  • Networking with local professionals, community leaders, and global experts.
  • Deep insight into global climate challenges and sustainable development successes.
How to Apply:

Interested candidates should submit:

  • A Portfolio of CAD designs/drawings (if available).
  • A brief cover letter outlining your motivation for applying and relevant expertise.
