We are seeking a full-time experienced sustainability manager to lead and support our increasing portfolio of net zero carbon projects and programmes. The successful candidate will join the existing responsible business team and deliver consultancy services including delivery of client carbon reduction strategies, technical advisory services, and net zero carbon solutions. The role will involve working with both internal and external design teams and contractors to deliver highly sustainable buildings, primarily for the Department for Education. The role also entails supporting Mace corporate ambitions to reduce client carbon emissions by 10 million tonnes and deliver 500 hectares of new biodiverse green space by 2026.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Leading the implementation of client net zero carbon strategies on individual projects and programmes from feasibility through design, procurement, and construction, agreeing project outcomes and ensuring their delivery by the project team.
  • Overseeing and quality assuring more junior grades in delivery roles working on these programmes.
  • Managing stakeholders and leading project managers to support delivery, resourcing, and reporting to the client.
  • Ensuring that wider sustainable design principles are embedded in projects and working with the wider Mace project team to deliver client outcomes.
  • Supporting work winning through bid support, innovation, client liaison, upskilling of colleagues, and external profile-raising of Mace services.
  • Supporting the development of client climate change, sustainability, and/or social value strategies on individual projects, including agreeing project outcomes and ensuring delivery by the project team.
  • Providing service excellence, delivering purpose-led and measurable outcomes for clients, with a particular focus on climate change, social value, and biodiversity.
  • Providing technical expertise and promoting innovation in a particular area of sustainability, such as waste, energy/carbon, water, responsible sourcing of materials, sustainable buildings, etc.
  • Providing generalist advice and support to major issues of sustainability with all relevant stakeholders.
  • Supporting the drive for Mace to be a leader in climate change and sustainability.
  • Managing the team and championing career development to ensure they have the opportunity to work to the best of their potential in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Working collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition and sharing responsibility for the proactive identification and management of the associated carbon emissions and reductions during the delivery of work.

You'll need to have:

  • Experience working with clients to identify carbon reduction opportunities.
  • Knowledge of sustainable building design, including embodied and operational carbon and energy reduction, in new build and refurbishment projects, including programme, cost, and operational impacts of NZC strategies.
  • Proven track record of driving design teams to maximise sustainability.
  • Knowledge of the implementation of green building accreditation schemes, in particular BREEAM.
  • Ability to lead/direct a project team to deliver the most appropriate solutions to meet client objectives.
  • Able to translate technical topics into layperson language and articulate the value of sustainability.
  • Championing sustainability, encouraging behavioral change throughout the business.
  • Developing innovation and best practice, including clearly communicating these to the wider business and our clients.
  • Able to translate best practices from one client/sector to another.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with clients and stakeholders including design team members, contractors, sub-contractors, and regulators.

You'll also have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (postgraduate degree, etc.) (or equivalent). NZC, Scope 1-3 emissions.
  • TCFD/TNFD.
  • Setting a scope, objectives, targets/industry benchmarks LETI, RICS.
  • Building performance standards - Part L & Future Standards - EN15978, ISO 14026 Standards PAS 2080 (50, 60, 35).
  • Frameworks e.g., UKGBC, SBT, TPI.
  • TM 54 and how to use them.
  • Embodied carbon and how to drive reductions - LCA - one click.
  • Electrification - heating and cooling demand/supply.
  • Governance & risk (PMO).
  • Interaction at different levels (executive vs project management)/(design team vs supply chain).
  • Building sustainability into contracts & procurement.
  • Building sustainability into the design process.
  • Biodiversity, nature-based solutions, green infrastructure.
  • Social value and quantification methodologies e.g., TOMS, V2S, SV portal.
  • Sustainability certification (BREEAM, LEED, WELL, etc.).
