Your new role


The Finance Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day financial operations of the charity. Working as part of a busy team, you will be accountable for making sure that the staff and stakeholders have the financial support they need to deliver their charitable purpose. Duties include:

  1. Provide support for the purchasing and sales ledger functions, investigate problems, deal with queries, liaise with suppliers/customers.
  2. Support the Head of finance and deputise for them as required.
  3. Update the fixed asset register.
  4. Produce monthly management information for budget holders, including preparation of all supporting journals and postings, monitoring salary and other operating costs, and providing a variance analysis report to ensure that they remain within budget by the financial year-end.
  5. Maintain the integrity of financial data, including the general ledger, ensuring that records are both accurate and retained according to guidelines. This will include housekeeping duties and preparing control account reconciliations.
  6. Perform regular reconciliation of bank and month-end control accounts. Raise requisitions, process journals and undertake any other financial transactions as required.
  7. Supporting the Head of Finance with the VAT reviews and the quarterly VAT return by preparing monthly adjustments and journals as directed.
  8. Support the annual budgeting process and year-end reporting, including the production of statutory annual accounts. Tasks for this include collating documents for audit; posting journals and responding to auditor data requests under supervision.

What you'll need to succeed

  1. Experience and knowledge of accounts preparation, purchase/sales ledger management, stock and fixed asset reporting, and financial accounting using complex financial systems.
  2. Excellent analytical skills, being able to extract and manipulate data, particularly Excel.
  3. Excellent interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate financial information to a range of staff and students.
  4. Experience of managing staff.
  5. Helpful and supportive manner, motivated to deliver improvements and contribute to team success.
  6. Able to manage time, workload and priorities according to deadlines.
  7. Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and prioritise work as new projects are introduced.
  8. Ability to develop good working relationships with colleagues, students and external bodies.
