Job description

Here at Penguin, we are implementing an ambitious data strategy to help drive our commercial and business objectives. This has been backed by a significant investment in technology, where we have gone cloud-first in embracing the Modern Data Stack (AWS, Snowflake, DBT, FiveTran and Terraform) to renew our entire data platform.

We’re now recruiting for a Data Engineer to harness these tools to take us where we need to be.

The role

As our incoming Data Engineer, you will be part of our Data Centre of Excellence, working alongside specialist pillars delivering Data Visualisation and Data Governance for the entire organisation. The critical Engineering pillar you will be part of is where data gets in front of the business decision makers so it’s a vital function within this team to provide traction across every department to deliver the strategy. You will be part of a team of Engineers, Architects and Analysts, reporting into our Head of Data Engineering.

Key responsibilities:
  1. Support our Head of Data Engineering to maintain and drive the Penguin Random House Data strategy.
  2. Work closely with our Data Visualisation and Data Governance teams to ensure our data platform develops to support our overall Data roadmap.
  3. Work closely with the broader Data Engineering team to create and evaluate business requirements and to support testing in the delivery of effective application data integration solutions.
  4. Help to implement and manage event-driven orchestration of data pipelines for both ETL and ELT.
  5. Participate in supporting functional, integration and performance testing of pipelines developed as part of our data integration solutions.
  6. Contribute towards best practice pipeline development and design.
  7. Assist in design and data modelling efforts of Data Marts and our Enterprise Data Warehouse.
  8. Participate in enhancing data pipeline standards and governance processes.
What you will bring:
  1. Experience as a Data Engineer delivering data engineering and data science solutions.
  2. Relevant technical experience of methods of data processing, data models and data infrastructure.
  3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to be able to liaise and influence effectively with all levels of management and business areas.
  4. Comfort in building and maintaining strong relationships with many stakeholders and colleagues.
Application instructions

Please apply with your CV by 11:59pm on Sunday 30th March. Please note we are looking for someone to join the team as soon as possible, but we are also happy to accommodate a reasonable notice period for the right candidate.

We anticipate a two-stage interview process which will include a virtual first-stage interview and in-person second stage interview. We are happy to discuss this further with you throughout the recruitment process.

£63,000 - £66,000 dependent on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus bonus and benefits.

What you can expect from us

Our people are the heart of our business, and we work hard to support a culture of responsibility and recognition. Our benefits include:

  • Financial – income protection, life assurance, childcare allowance
  • Wellbeing – healthcare cash plan, critical illness cover, health checks
  • Lifestyle – enhanced parental leave, tech scheme, free and discounted books

While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. Hybrid working is our current practice with time spent working from home or in our London office. Time required in the office will vary depending on projects and collaborative working sessions, and we are happy to discuss this during the interview process.
