Communications Manager, External Relations

Angel Court, London EC 2R 7HJ – hybrid, 2 – 3 days in the office

Permanent

Full Time (37.5 hours per week)

Salary £50K - £55K depending on experience

You’ll play an active part in promoting and protecting Bupa’s reputation through proactive and reactive communications.

With a strong understanding of the external landscape, infectious enthusiasm, focus and great organisational skills, you’ll work with stakeholders and fellow members of the external relations team to develop proactive consumer and corporate PR campaigns.

You’ll work with senior stakeholders to design and develop strategic campaigns that align to thought leadership and commercial objectives and deliver a joined-up integrated approach across paid, earned and owned channels to enhance our reputation.

You’ll prepare internal briefing notes and provide research and evaluation to proactively build our Bupa story in the UK as a leading healthcare provider and an employer of choice.

You’ll feel confident working on complex issues, think creatively and juggle multiple priorities.

You’ll react and respond to press enquiries, handle media issues and take part in a rota for daily media monitoring and out-of-hour on call duties.

As with all members of the external relations team, you’ll have regular exposure to the Bupa executive and leadership teams in the UK, so working with leaders at a senior level and representing external relations and corporate affairs is a must.

How you’ll help us make health happen

  • With your strong understanding of the external landscape, you’ll identify opportunities for effective proactive corporate and consumer PR campaigns and deliver all aspects of campaigns to a high quality and standard, on time and within budgets, aligned to our strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrate an integrated campaign mindset, effectively distributing campaigns across channels to drive the greatest reach and return on investment.
  • Confidently handle reactive media enquiries in traditional and social media and advise the business of the risks and potential outcomes associated with specific enquiries and recommend courses of mitigating action.
  • Plan and deliver strategic and tactical responsibilities independently or managing agency support.
  • Build and maintain relationships with all levels of management within Bupa and the wider Corporate Affairs function.
  • Actively participate in ensuring the smooth running of the press office function, handling media enquiries from national, regional and specialist media.
  • Produce and align high quality written materials, including written statements, Q&As, briefings, press releases under time pressure.
  • Liaise with senior Bupa leaders to align media response.
  • Maintain accurate records of signed-off statements.
  • Participate in the rota for the Duty Press Officer to cover out of hours media calls and to prepare a daily media briefing.
  • Build relationships with key media on behalf of Bupa.
  • Make sure senior executive are media trained to the appropriate standard and fully briefed prior to any media interview.
  • Support the team in delivering Bupa digital corporate communications activity, including helping to develop integrated communications campaigns across digital channels such as: Bupa.co.uk, Twitter and LinkedIn and online social/digital media.

You

  • Proven experience gained in-house or in agency of proposing, planning and delivering effective corporate and consumer PR campaigns.
  • Demonstrable ability to take full responsibility for key projects.
  • Ability to create high quality written material, translation of content for use across multiple channels including traditional PR materials, blogs, communities, intranets.
  • Experience in participating in a reactive press office for major corporate brands, including handling national, regional and specialist media enquiries.
  • Confidence in handling hostile media enquiries.
  • A range of media contacts across national outlets.
  • Excellent analytical skills to identify a range of solutions for any given issue.
  • Evidence of technical expertise in the execution of digital and social media communications and campaign activity.
  • Highly creative and energetic with a flexible approach.
  • An effective and reliable team player, commands respect and confidence from colleagues and stakeholders.
