Job description

We are seeking to appoint a Bid Writer to join a growing Business Development team, working within a group of Engineering businesses that deliver high-value projects across the UK.
Due to sustained business growth, this role is key in supporting the company's tendering activities across a wide range of sectors. It would suit someone with experience writing bids for Utilities, Engineering, Construction, or Public sector contracts, and who thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
This position will be based at Head Office in Chandlers Ford, with flexibility for occasional work from other regional offices.

About the Role

As a Bid Writer, you'll play a key role in producing high-quality, tailored content across the PQQ and ITT stages, ensuring all responses align with scoring criteria and meet the expectations of public and private sector clients.
Working closely with the Tender Manager, you'll collaborate with subject matter experts across the business, utilise existing bid collateral, and develop new responses where required.

This role has two key phases:

  1. When in tender: You will be responsible for reviewing allocated tender questions, assessing whether existing responses can be tailored, or gathering new content from relevant departments. You'll drive each tender response alongside the Tender Manager, ensuring clarity, compliance, and a compelling case for the client.
  2. When not in tender: You'll take the lead on identifying gaps in current tender content, proactively working with departments to develop new responses, embed process changes, and continuously improve future submissions.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Write compelling and tailored content for PQQs, RFIs, and ITTs that clearly address scoring criteria.
  2. Review tender documents to assess requirements and contribute to bid strategy.
  3. Use internal bid libraries to tailor responses, or collaborate with subject matter experts when new content is required.
  4. Work across all areas of the business to close tender gaps and improve overall bid readiness.
  5. Use AI tools, such as Copilot and ChatGPT, to assist with research and content creation.
  6. Conduct research using publicly available data and local strategies to strengthen submissions.
  7. Evaluate tender feedback and identify improvement areas for future bids.
  8. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations including Utilities Contracts Regulations 2016 and Public Contracts Regulations 2015.
  9. Build strong relationships across departments, working collaboratively to meet tight deadlines.
  10. Contribute to the continual development of the company's bid library, templates, and tools.
Skills & Experience Required
  1. Demonstrable experience in bid writing, ideally within engineering, plant hire, construction, or utilities sectors.
  2. Familiarity with tendering for local authorities or managed service providers, including NHS, rail, water, and defence.
  3. Strong understanding of the tender lifecycle, particularly the PQQ and ITT phases.
  4. Experience using tender portals such as Achilles, Ariba, Jaggaer Bravo Solutions, or similar.
  5. Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to different audiences.
  6. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  7. Solution-focused with a proactive approach to closing content gaps and improving team capability.
  8. Well-organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines.
  9. Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
  10. Experience working in deadline-driven, compliance-focused environments.
  11. A full UK driving licence preferred.
