Youth Basketball Coach

STATEMENT OF AGENCY:
Commonpoint is a multifaceted community center dedicated to sustaining and enhancing the quality of individual, family and communal life throughout New York City, offering services to people of all ages, ability levels, stages of life and backgrounds. They strive to meet the evolving needs of their community of over 100,000 members ranging from providing in-school and after-school programs, professional and career development, assistance with food insecurity, legal services, financial counseling, mental health services, senior classes, dementia care programs, and tax preparation assistance to name a few. Commonpoint has grown tremendously in the last five years and now has a mission-driven staff of 3,000 and over 80 sites in the five boroughs.

STATEMENT OF THE JOB:
Youth Sports Coaches are key members of the Health & Wellness team and will report to the Senior Director of Health & Wellness. The primary responsibilities include hands-on coaching, lesson planning, and role modeling good sportsmanship for athletes aged 2-13 years old. Coaching opportunities in the following sports: Tennis, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Lacrosse, and Baseball/Tee-Ball. Youth Sports Coaches ensure that fair play and the philosophy of the Youth Sports Programs is maintained. They are expected to assist in assessing a player's skills and abilities to help create a balanced playing field, create and implement lesson plans for practices, maintain supervision and care of each athlete under the care of the Youth Sports program, organize and maintain sports equipment, and communicate team practices and games to team members. They must represent Commonpoint in a positive light at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Plan and lead skill-focused practices.
2. Develop age-appropriate training programs.
3. Foster teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship.
4. Evaluate player progress and provide feedback.
5. Coach scheduled practices.
6. Collaborate with parents and staff.
7. Maintain safety and enforce program policies.
8. Act as a mentor and positive role model.

1. Previous youth coaching experience.
2. Strong knowledge of sports fundamentals and strategies.
3. Experience working with diverse youth backgrounds.
4. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and time management skills.
5. CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

1. Experience creating structured practice plans.
2. Understanding of child development in sports.
3. Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
4. Certification from recognized coaching organizations (e.g., USA Basketball National Alliance for Youth Sports).

1. Set expectations for team involvement and behavior.
2. Assist with equipment setup and breakdown.
3. Complete required reports and attend training sessions.

1. Late afternoon/evening and weekend availability is required.
2. Commitment to practices throughout the season.
