The Faculty of Biological Sciences at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany invites applications for a
W3 Professorship for Pharmaceutical Biology
to be filled beginning 1 October 2026.
We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates (m/f/d) with a proven track record within pharmaceutical biology, both in research and teaching. We encourage applications from candidates with an excellent publication record, who can progress their research and are internationally recognized in a current field within pharmaceutical biology. The research focus should be centered around topics such as antiinfectives, RNA biology, mode of action of natural products, or natural product-related structure biology, in order to complement and strengthen the institute's existing scientific interests in the areas biomaterials, natural products, and inflammation research. Successful acquisition of third-party funding and leadership skills are required. The approbation as a pharmacist is desirable but not a strict requirement. High-quality teaching, integrating innovative methods, is expected. The position involves teaching pharmaceutical biology in German language as part of our accredited pharmacy course. In addition, theses in the pharmacy diploma programme are supervised.
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the institute’s portfolio of grant awards, scientific publications, and to cooperate closely with members of the institute, the Faculty of Biological Sciences, and the Faculties of Medicine as well as of Chemistry and Earth Sciences. Furthermore, the successful applicant’s expertise should support existing research consortia, e.g., the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse or the Senckenberg Institute for Plant Form and Function. The willingness to cooperate with work groups of subject-related areas of the university and external research institutes, such as the Leibniz Institutes for Aging Research, for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, and for Photonic Technologies, and the associated priorities of university research is assumed.
To be eligible for the position, candidates must have a completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude, and a particular aptitude for academic work, which is typically demonstrated by an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a Habilitation or equivalent academic achievements. Appointment as a professor shall be for life as a civil servant, provided that the legal requirements are met.
