The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is a modern university with a long-standing tradition in academic excellence and a wide range of international partner institutions. The junior professorship with tenure track is aimed at academics in the early career phase.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences II represents the fields of chemistry, physics, and mathematics in research and teaching. Research is focused on synthetic and biological macromolecules, solid-state interfaces, and nanostructures, as well as energy conversion and storage materials and contributes to the university's profile areas of transformation and sustainability.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is looking to appoint an outstanding individual to a W1-Professorship with Tenure Track to W2
„Synthetic Organic Chemistry”
within the Faculty of Natural Sciences II, Institute of Chemistry. The position will commence preferably by October 1st, 2025.

We are seeking an outstanding individual with a clear potential for development in research and teaching in organic chemistry. Ideal candidates should have an outstanding doctorate in chemistry and demonstrable expertise through excellent development and application work in current research areas of organic chemistry. The candidate should develop an independent scientific profile and independent research approaches that complement the existing research at the Institute of Chemistry in a meaningful way.

Applications from all areas of modern synthetic organic chemistry are expressly welcome. The professorship is intended to further strengthen current and future research networks of the faculty, in particular the Graduate Research School 2670 "Beyond Amphiphilicity" as well as the successor activities of the Collaborative Research Center TRR 102 and activities in the Federal Excellence Strategy.

The incumbent will represent teaching in the field of organic chemistry in bachelor's and master's and state examination degree programs. Active participation in academic self-administration is expected.

Further duties and responsibilities are stipulated in section 34 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities.

Applicants must fulfil the appointment requirements in accordance with section 40 of the Higher Education Act of Saxony-Anhalt. In particular, the prerequisites for appointment are a completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude, and a special aptitude for academic work, which is usually demonstrated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate. As a rule, the time between the final doctoral degree examination and the application for this junior professorship should not exceed six years.

Junior professorships are filled on the basis of a temporary civil service contract, initially for a period of three years. The position shall be renewed for a further three years conditional upon a positive mid-term evaluation.

If the tenure evaluation is positive, the position is transferred to a permanent W2 professorship without a new call for applications and - provided the general civil service requirements are met – the appointment is made as a civil service for life, or alternatively the position is transferred to a permanent employment contract under private law.
